Origins: Science, Faith, and Philosophy
(Course Materials)
This site contains materials for a course on the subject of origins. I hope that this information will be of help to others who are interested in addressing the important subject of origins in a classroom format. The course is designed to benefit persons with little science background, as well as those with college-level science training who may not be up to date with the issues surrounding this subject. For those who are very familiar with origins issues, perhaps the material may include a few interesting new details. The class is at an introductory level, and should be considered "Origins 101".A main goal of the class is to develop good critical thinking skills on this subject. A key to doing that is to distinguish between the practice of science and the worldview positions. Another main goal of the class is to survey the most important data in the various fields relating to origins. In doing this, I find that the scientific data strongly indicate that an Intelligent Designer is required to explain our existence.
Below are links to each section, which include overhead slides, notes, and illustrations. The main pages for each section are intended for presentation as overhead transparencies. Along with the main pages, each section contains notes which describe in more detail the main points behind some of the discussion questions and illustrations. The notes also contain references to supplementary materials that can be presented to the class. Each section typically begins with a set of thought-provoking quotations that are relevant to the subject matter. I start each class with one of these quotes. The information in the sections below is supplemented with videos, audio resources, selected passages from books, and articles from both popular magazines and the technical literature.
