New for 2010
With the 2009 season now into the books, it’s time to look ahead to 2010 and what we need to do to make things better. The overall combination is pretty good, but every season there seems to be some nagging little item that sticks out like a loose nail that needs to be hammered down.
Enginewise we have a couple of things going on. Inside, the basic configuration will stay the same except for a couple of changes. The AA pistons we ran in the past have proven to make more power than the high end JE or CP pistons we've tried. I've learned not to argue with what the motor tells me it likes.
Everything else on the motor stays the same. The MFI system is working great and we have it pretty much dialed in where we want it.
We have some chassis work that will be the Big Deal for this off-season. A switch to IRS, a narrowed rear track, new wheels and bigger tires, along with disc brakes at all corners. Hopefully we'll see some positive results from that. There's some other stuff we'll do to help with reducing weight and increasing consistency, but we'll keep that close to the vest for now.
Focus for 2010
The 2010 schedule will hopefully start off with the Bakersfield March Meet. We are really excited about this event. With the magnitude of our off-season changes, my hope is that it is all completed in time.
This will be our fourth go in the "modern era" and seventh overall, and with our win there in 2009, and becoming the first VW to win in any category in the 52 year history of the event, we feel a strong obligation to keep on coming. It’s pretty cool to race in front of 30,000 fans….even if a good number of ‘em are cruising the pits when we run!
Again in 2010 we’re looking at doing more races closer to home and less long distance events. Unfortunately, likely candidates for the scheduling ax are Phoenix Bugorama, both Drag day events as well as BugIn Fontana if it’s there. If there is a PRA event at Fontana, that too will get axed. As far as PRA events go, our focus there will be on individual events and perhaps playing the spoiler! There might even be a different pilot for PRA events!
Our primary focus will be on West Coast Hot Rod Association events at Famoso as well as the ANRA series along with our partial PRA presence. Dragfest is also a lot of fun. We'll have to wait to see if they are going to have our class there this coming year. Last year, we had to ask for it. They obliged, but did not promote it, and there were only a few cars in E/Gas. Hopefully, by inquiring about it sooner, perhaps we can have a bigger showing.
Depending on how things work out with planned car modifications, the overall schedule will remain in flux till we get closer to the start of the season. We still have the fire and the burning desire to race, and hopefully we will be racing just as much, if not more, by racing more at our home track.
See you at the races! |
