2007-2008 Portfolio

The Program

Howard County Maryland Public School System in conjunction with the University of Maryland Baltimore developed the program with a grant from the Department of Education. The program is divided into Elementary School Cohorts, Middle School Cohorts, and High School Cohorts. The program began in the 2007-2008 school year and will continue for three years. The three years will be devoted to three different aspects of teaching history. The first year is devoted to reading about history. The second year focuses on the use of documents in the study of history. The final year will culminate with the writing of history.

The Authors

The authors of this site are Marcella Ruland and Michelle Oland. We teach at Glenelg High School in Glenelg Maryland and we are members of the MMAHT High School Cohort. We have decided to partner on portfolio. We bring different strengths to the project, and between us, we teach the various US History classes offered at our school. Michelle teaches 9th grade US History and 10th grade US Government. Marcella teaches 9th grade US History as well as 11th grade AP World History and 12th grade AP US History.

The Portfolios

The 2007-2008 Portfolio reflects the first year's focus on reading history. The purpose of the project is to evaluate the effectiveness of various reading strategies on student achievement in order to determine which strategies benefit overall student achievement.
