This Second Empire house was build by Thomas Martin, a Briton who came here to manage an elastic fabric mill in Easthampton, MA. Originally, the house had a peaked tower on the back left and a church-steeple-like tower on the front. Though some of the original architectire is sadly missing, the house still is one of the finest in town. According to local legend, a blocked-up doorway in the basement covers a tunnel that once ran to Soldier's Home. Source: Images of America: Chelsea by Margaret Harriman Clarke. |
