We are currently in the thick of another handball season, and the years most exciting handball tournament is nearly upon us. Those of you who have played in this particular tournament know what Im saying. However, there is some bad news. Most of us are not eligible to actually play in this tournament. The greatest tournament of the year is the National Intercollegiate Handball Championships, and this event is being held in our own back yard at the University of Minnesotas Recreation Center.
This event has a very unique personality. We all know handball to be the greatest individual sport known to the human race. However, in this environment, individuals will be competing for the team that is representing their university. There is electricity that is created by individuals competing for a cause that is larger than their own desire for success. This feeling cannot be found at any other tournament. This includes any national championship or any world championship. The other characteristic that distinguishes this tournament from all others is that it is the only tournament in which its main purpose is to serve as a vehicle for the promotion of handball to young adults. It is a fact that approximately seventy percent of all participants in this tournament have been playing handball for less than one year. These are young adults that have decided to give handball a try. They are converted baseball players, soccer players, hockey players, wrestlers, etc. There are those that may have never considered themselves athletes in their past. None of that matters here. They have put their egos in the closet, and are here to compete for themselves and their schools in the greatest tournament in all of handball.
I encourage everyone to witness this event. It is a great example of what handball is really about. This tournament represents competition, fair play, and camaraderie in its most perfect form. I hope to see you all there.
