This seventh annual event was emceed by Barry Becklin. MSHA Secretary Sheldon Silberman acknowledged all of the trophy winners in the 1999 State Tournaments and MSHA Brett Broxey presented the Sponsor and Top Ten awards. But the highlight of the evening was the induction of these three fine candidates.

Bob Schaumann

presented by Ken Johnson

Bob was born in the heart of New York City and, to this day, it shows. He played high school baseball and basketball, and varsity basketball at the University of New York at New Paltz. He was introduced to handball in the Air Force in the mid-fifties and has played non-stop ever since. Upon retiring from the military in 1990, he earned a law degree and is currently practicing with a major firm. He is being honored as both an outstanding player and a selfless and skilled teacher of young handball recruits.

Bob's on-court accomplishments include eleven first-place and nine second-place finishes in Minnesota State tournaments as well as numerous top showings in other regional and national tournaments.

Tom Quilling

presented by Darryl Ekstrom

Tom is another outstanding athlete who displayed skills in team sports before coming to handball. In high school he played football and was the state champion in the javelin throw. He was also a key member of his high school state champion basketball team. At Rocky Mountain College he played baseball, was All-Conference in basketball and small college All-America quarterback (3rd in the nation on total offense). His 14 varsity letters gained him entry into Rocky Mountain’s Hall of Fame. Tom was a founding director of the MSHA, and in 1998 received the Minneapolis AC’s prestigious Magee Award.

Tom's handball career includes 24 first-place finishes including: five straight in the Central Regional Master's division in 1981-85, The 1981 National YMCA Master's, and five Minnesota State championships, as well as many other regional tournaments.

John Nett

presented by Dr. Scott Hannon

An all-around athlete, Winona’s John Nett played high school football, basketball and baseball, and continued with baseball at St. Mary’s College. He began playing handball at Ft. Ord during a two-year stint in the Army. John has been part of a large and solid Winona handball group that formed in 1971 and is still active today. Between 1978 and 1992, Nett was ranked among the top four Open Singles players in Minnesota...nine times! Since winning his first Open tournament in 1974, he has amassed 109 tournament firsts and seconds in the Open, Master’s and Golden Master’s divisions. Incredible!

The top ten hand players were honored with Top Ten shirts. Pictured from left to right: Pete Crouser, Steve Johnson, Andy Hoisington, Leif Wallin, Ryan Maloney, and Brett Broxey.

The evening finished with all in attendance winning at least one door prize culled from MSHA "warehouse."

MSHA Treasure Larry Larson distributes the door prizes.
