Decathlon Athletic Club and St. Anthony Athletic Club Win the 1999 Twin Cities League Championships
March 27, 1999
University of Minnesota Rec Center Minneapolis, MN
The Twin Cities Handball League held its annual playoffs for the Monday and Tuesday Night Leagues at the University of Minnesota Recreational Center on Saturday, March 27, 1999. The participants and spectators dined on pizza and drank pop and beer. Again this year, the members of the first, second, and third place teams received a twelve ounce mug for their trophy collection and use.
This was the ninth play-off for the Tuesday Night League. The Decathlon Athletic Club won its third play-off match in the last nine years. Previously, the Decathlon won the League's first play-off with Captain Nick Evangelista. Three years ago, Decathlon won under the leadership of Captain Steve Hannes. And this year, the Decathlon Athletic Club won with newcomer Captain Mike Auran who moved up from the Monday Night League.
Tuesday Night Championship
The Decathlon defeated the University of Minnesota Carpet Baggers. The first completed match was in number three singles. Mike Wells of the UofM handily defeated Al Alstadt. Shortly after the first match finished, Pete Crouser of the UofM completed his defeat of Kris Schaumann in the number one singles match. The Decathlon doubles team, Brian Coonce and Jim May, defeated Anna Christoff and Chris Klein in a hard played game. The winner of the team championship match was finally decided in the match played between Decathlon's Andy Hoisington and U of M's Steve Christoff in two long, contested, well played games. Captain Matt Hiber of the University of Minnesota was unable to play while recovering from a knee injury.
Tuesday Night Third Place
The Trouble Boys of the Midway delivered their brand of trouble and defeated Captain Greg Taylor's Skyway YMCA. Tim Labey of the Trouble Boys won the number one singles. After warming up and losing in the first game, Tim quickly dispatched Nick Brown in the next game and the tie breaker. Bill Hickey of the Skyway easily defeated Ron Linden in the number two singles, and Bill Brown of the Skyway, and also Nick Brown's father, comfortably defeated Bernie Krenner. Third place was finally decided in the doubles match when Captain Don Reiter and Leif Wallin of the Trouble Boys defeated Randy Tinsen and Greg Sothern in a closely fought match.
Tuesday Night Consolation
The River Rats of the St. Paul Skyway YMCA defeated the St. Anthony Athletic Club in the Consolation Match. In the number one singles, Captain Mike Erdmanczyk of the River Rats defeated Mike Zegarac. Todd Brazman of St. Anthony won in a close tie breaker 11-10. Todd easily defeated Mike Kloos in the first game, but lost to Mike in close second game. In the number three singles, Kelly Raglin of the River Rats defeated Emil Weiler. In the doubles match, the Maloney Brothers of the River Rats, Ian and Ryan, defeated Luke Friendshuh and Jeff Palumbo in another tie breaker. Captain Sheldon Silberman of St. Anthony was unable to attend this year's tournament due to business.
Monday Night Championship
The Monday Night League completed its fifth annual play-off with the St. Anthony Athletic Club of SE Minneapolis winning its first championship in either league. Northwest Clubs came in second again in the Monday Night League for the forth time in the last five years. In the number one singles, Rick Fairbanks of St. Anthony avenged his earlier loss during the regular season to Creighton Orth in an exhausting match. The SAAC team of Dennis McComas and Aaron Tillesen finally got their second game and match in order after losing their first game to Captain Tim Leahy and Harlan Paetznick of the Northwest Clubs. They sailed through the second game and the tie breaker winning the Monday Night League championship. Although the championship was decided before Steve Richardson of the Northwest Clubs finally won, the long, number two singles match was decided in a tiebreaker game against Captain Rick Jaede of St. Anthony.
Monday Night Third Place
The Midway YMCA defeated the Skyway YMCA in a close ending. In the doubles match, Gary Ales and Jim Bruning of the Skyway easily won their first game, finished the second game with seven unanswered points, and defeated Warren Mitchell and Ron Sushak. However, in the number one singles, Captain Wayne Kobbervig of the Midway defeated Fred Wilkensin and in the number two singles, John Kunesh easily defeated Pete Rosene.
