Held at the Wabasha Street Caves on May 16, 1997, the Awards Banquet was a great success. Over 100 attendees witnessed the induction of St. Paul native Terry Muck into the Minnesota Handball Hall of Fame.
1996 Inductee, Bill Yambrick introduced Terry to the enthusiastic crowd. We were reminded of Terry's handball history including his winning the United States Handball Association (USHA) National Singles Championship in 1973. He also won the first National Pro Doubles Invitational Tournament held at the St. Paul Athletic Club in 1973. Spanning more than two decades, his other major handball accomplishments include three singles Pro Stop victories, National YMCA Open Singles and Open Doubles championships, and many regional and local championships throughout the upper midwest.
Terry was also famous for his softball skills. He was selected as an All-World Softball Tournament Team member for three years and was a member of the World Softball Champion Aurora, Illinois Seal Masters. In 1974 he was named the MVP of the World Tournament.
Terry also gained some success in baseball spending two years with the Atlanta Brave Class "AA" West Palm Beach farm team hitting .298 and .319.
He left baseball to complete his education as a Baptist Minister. He Graduated from Bethel College and received his Doctorate in Religion from Northwestern College. As a Fulbright Scholarship recipient he spent a year in Sri Lanka living and working with Buddhist Monks.
Terry spoke of what handball had taught him about life and success and goals. He related his understanding of reaching for the top and how illusive that goal can be. His talk was inspirational for all.
Included in the evening's events was recognition of this past years sponsors and the top ten awards as well as a reading of all the trophy winners in the twenty divisions in 1997.
