PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

            Greetings MOAA members,

I just received the April issue of the Military Officer.  The magazine contains lots of good information.  Right inside the front cover is a letter from Vice Adm. Norb Ryan Jr., President of MOAA.  In the letter he stresses the importance of membership and outlines the “Give Me Ten” program.  He points out that the Chapter receives $10.00 for each new member and $100.00 bonus for 10 new members.  The chapter also receives $20.00 for each new life member.  If you know of friends or acquaintances who are eligible, please tell them about our organization and refer them to our Membership Chair, Jeanne White.

The Scholarship Committee will be selecting our scholarship recipient in April.  The scholarship will be awarded at the respective school’s awards program in May.  As of now it looks as if we will have at least two applicants.

The Nominating Committee for this coming year has been appointed.  Members are Ellen MacLellan, Suzanne White and Guenter Hennig.  If asked to serve in an elected position, please consider accepting.  We are also looking for one or more volunteers to take over the duties of Social Chairman.  If you are willing to serve, please let me know.

            Sincerely, Alf

SURVIVOR BENEFIT

Effective April 1, 2007, most Survivor Benefit Plan  annuitants age 62 and older will see an increase to their SBP annuities.  The new minimum SBP annuity amount as of that date will be 50% of the military sponsor’s SBP covered retired pay - an increase from the current 45% minimum.  The increase will show up in May 2007 checks.  This is the third of four scheduled increases in SBP annuities MOAA convinced Congress to put into law several years ago.  The final one will take place on April 1, 2007.  This is just one of the things for which MOAA has fought.

JROTC AWARDS

The Venice Chapter has voted to give four awards this year to deserving JROTC Students.  One male and one female at Venice High School, and one male and one female at North Port High School.  Awards will be presented at the High School Awards Programs in May.

TRICARE UNIFORM FORMULARY UPDATE

On March 22, a DoD panel proposed moving several pain narcotic, glaucoma, and anti-depressant medications to the third tier ($22 co-pay vs $3 or $9 for drugs on first and second tiers), along with some newer sedatives.  Ultram ER (extended release) will be moved to the third tier with a 90 day implementation time. Several other drugs in this class remain available at the lower co-pay. Some Glaucoma drugs, anti-depressants and newer sedatives will also be moved to the third tier.  For a complete list check with Tricare.

JUST A REMINDER:  The American Diabetes Assoc has asked everyone to help spread the word by informing family, friends, and co-workers about the seriousness of diabetes.  Encourage those at risk to be tested!!
