PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Greetings MOAA members,
As I write this message on the evening of Thanksgiving Day, I am reminded that we have much to be thankful for. First and foremost we are thankful for the men and women serving in the armed forces, especially in Iraq and Afganistan, but also in every other part of the world. I am also thankful for MOAA. It is an organization where we have many friends but also an organization that is dedicated to protecting the interests of the retired and active duty military.

Medicare has announced that the basic Medicare Part B premium will be $96.40 per month for 2008 (an increase of $2.90). The good news is that this is the smallest increase in recent years. The bad news is that some Medicare-eligibles with higher incomes will see much larger increases. And all Medicare-eligibles are likely to face significantly bigger premium hikes in 2009. Check out the specifics at http://moaaonline.org/ct/B1zCiwF1kRkJ/.

2008 Retiree COLA is 2.3%. It’s official. The Bureau of Labor Statistics announced the monthly consumer price index for September-the final number needed to calculate the 2008 cost of living adjustment (COLA) for military retired pay, survivor annuities, and Social Security. Most military retirees will see 2.3% COLA effective December 1.

It has just come to my attention that our new Treasurer, Guenter Hennig will not be with us to be installed as an Officer of the Venice Area Chapter MOAA. He has just undergone Cardiac Bypass Surgery. Our best wishes for a speedy recovery are with him. Hopefully he will have a very uneventful recuperation and will be back with us soon.

As a senior citizen was driving down the freeway, his car phone rang. Answering, he heard his wife’s voice urgently warning him, “Herman, I just heard on the news that there’s a car going the wrong way on Interstate 77. Please be careful!” “Heck”, Herman said, “It’s not just one car. It’s hundreds of them!”

Put your car keys beside your bed at night. If you hear a noiseoutside your home or some one is trying to get into your home, just press the panic button for your car. The alarm will be set off and the horn will continue to sound until you turn it off or the battery dies.
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
If you locked your keys and remote in the car and you have an extra remote at home, phone someone at home from your cell phone to their cell phone. Then hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at home press the unlock button on your car remote. Your car should unlock. I haven’t tried this one so let me know if it works.
