The January Luncheon was a great success, and we all learned many things that we did not know about the VA Benefits. We are very fortunate to have offices close at hand and qualified people to assist Veterans, and or their spouses whenever needed. If you missed the luncheon, I am publishing the telephone numbers. Please save them for future reference. County Office (941) 861-2899, or South County Office at (941) 861-3047.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Greetings MOAA members,
Over the past several months we have had a number of questions from retired military and surviving spouses regarding benefits for retirees and survivors. These are important questions to all of us. Jerry Derrick, the Sarasota County Veterans Service Officer who was the guest speaker at the MOAA Luncheon at the Boca Royale Country Club on January 23rd addressed some of these issues. His staff is available to assist veterans and survivors regarding benefits. Contact his office in the South County Administration Building in Venice at 861-3047 for assistance.
Just a reminder that the Venice Area Chapter MOAA Board of Directors will meet at 11:00 am just prior to the membership meeting on February 19. The purpose of the meeting is to review the By-Laws and the Policies and Procedures Manual. I am asking board members to review the documents in advance. The agenda will also include “Any other business” so board members may bring up items of concern to the board at that time. If the business is not completed before the time to start the regular membership meeting, we will recess the board and reconvene after the regular meeting. Members that have recommendations and concerns should bring them to the attention of a board member prior to the board meeting.
The February Social on Wednesday, February 13th will feature Ms Sandra Beckley, Director of the Sarasota VA National Cemetery as speaker. I urge you to attend this important event. Complete information is included elsewhere in this newsletter.
Sincerely, Alf

All are invited to attend.

Our present Webmaster Paul Nienabor will not be able to continue with this job so an urgent call was put out for a new Webmaster. Marjorie Healey has graciously offered to fill this position and we are looking forward to having her. Many thanks to Paul for setting up the Web Site and managing it for as long as he has.
Needless to say that he has done an excellent job and the Chapter has won awards for our Web Site.
One of our long time members has moved to a Nursing Home. Harry Millar and his wife Clara have been active with the Chapter and attended most of the membership meetings. We will miss Harry’s presence and look forward to Clara’s continued participation in Chapter activities. Clara, if we can do anything to help, please let us know.

INCOME TAXES
Just a reminder, I am sure all of us are now thinking about having our taxes prepared. If not, I think that we should. The AARP Tax –Aide is in service again and they will be busily doing taxes again this year. In Venice they are located at the Jacaranda Public Library. AARP Tax-Aide is the nation’s largest, volunteer-run tax assistance and preparation service available free to taxpayers with low and middle income, with special attention to those age 60 and older.
To locate an AARP Tax-Aide site most convenient to you, call the toll-free number at l-888-227-7669, or visit the website at www.aarp.org/taxaide for February 1 to April 15. They do a great job, and remember, it is a Free Service.
