SHINGLES VACCINATION

An earlier edition of the AFA update mentioned a Shingles vaccine available through the VA.  We failed to include the link to the VA website which provided the details, including the explanation that the vaccination was available to Veterans who are patients at VA medical facilities nationwide.  VA Physicians may offer the vaccination on an in-patient basis to patients with appropriate medical conditions.  Further notes @ VA Website.

.   PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

            Greetings MOAA members,

The October Social was a wonderful brunch on Sunday, October 7th at the Venice Golf and Country Club.  A special “Thank You” to the McIllmoyles for arranging this event.  The speaker was Florida state Representative Doug Holder who gave an update on current legislative issues in Tallahassee.  We had a good turnout and it was a very enjoyable event.

Be sure to attend the Veterans Day observance at 10:00 am on Sunday, November 11 in Venice.  It will be at Heritage Park at the west end of Venice Avenue.

Welcome back to all of our “snowbird” members!  We look forward to renewing friendships and catching up on news at the upcoming socials and regular meetings.

The next social is at the Olde World Restaurant in North Port.  Congressmen Vern Buchanan has been invited to speak but as of this writing,, we have not received confirmation of his attendance.

            Sincerely Alf

INFORMATION FOR POST 9/11 VETERANS

Congressman Buchanan is working to identify constituents who would benefit from the Post 9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act (H.R. 2702).  The Congressman cosponsored the bill to provide veterans who have served on active duty since September 11, 2001 with educational benefits similar to those provided in the original post World War II GI Bill of 1944.  Please forward to me contact information for post 9/11 veterans enrolled in or interested in attending college who would be willing to attend a press conference we are planning regarding this bill.

For additional information regarding this bill please contact me.

Thank you for your assistance,

Sincerely,

AMERICAN LEGION WAR MEMORIAL

The city of Sarasota is creating an impressive Historic district downtown.  As part of this major project there is a proposal to move the American Legion War Memorial, which was originally located at Five Points, from its current location at the JD Hamel Park back to Five Points.  The Sarasota County Veterans Commission asks for your opinion on whether or not we should support this move.

The Commission was briefed on the Historical District project by Ernie Ritz the President of the Downtown Merchants Association.  Some background:  In June of 1917 the citizens of Sarasota erected a flag pole at Fife Points to recognize the “boys who marched off to battle with the Kaiser”.  On November 11, 1928 the current Memorial was dedicated at the base of that flag pole.  After WWLL a list of Sarasotans who gave their lives for America were added to the Memorial.  In 1954 the road department declared that the landmark memorial was a “traffic hazard” and it was moved to its current location at J D Hamel Park.

At the November 15, 2007 meeting of the Veterans Commission we will discuss and vote on whether or not to support the moving of the American Legion War Memorial back to Five Points.  We ask that you attend this important meeting.  The meeting will begin at 1 pm.

If you cannot make the meeting to speak on this issue, please send me an e-mail with your thoughts about this proposal.  If you have other ideas about how best handle this, please feel free to express them.  I will take your responses and present them at the meeting.

Warm Regards,

Rich

TRICARE ADDS COVERAGE FOR BREAST CANCER MRI SCREENINGS

Recognizing the importance of early detection, officials, from the TRICARE Management Activity recently changed their policy, adding coverage for Magnetic Resonance Imaging screening for women at high risk of developing breast cancer.  The American Cancer Society has clear guidelines defining high risk, which doctors can use to determine who qualifies for the coverage.  If any qualified beneficiary receives this care in the near future and it is denied, they can resubmit their claim for reimbursement.  More information is at the TRICARE Website.
