Excerpts from the Gospel of Matthew

Matthew 13:24 – 30

Heofona ríce is geworden þǽm menn gelíc þe séow gód sǽd on his æcere.  Sóþlíce þá þá menn slépon, þá cóm his féonda sum and oferséow hit mid coccele on middum þǽm hwǽte and férde þanon.  Sóþlíce þá séo wyrt wéox and þone waestm bróhte, þá ætíewde se coccel hine. Þá éodon þæs hláfordes þéowas and cwǽdon, “Hláford, hú ne séowe þú gód sǽd on þínum æcere? Hwanon hæfde hé coccel?”  Þá cwæþ hé, “Þæt dyde unhold mann.”  Þá cwǽdon þá þéowas, “Wilt þú wé gáþ and gaderiaþ híe?”  Þá cwæþ hé, “Nese, þé lǽs gé þone hwǽte áwurtwalien þonne gé þone coccel gaderiaþ.  Lǽtaþ ǽgðer weaxan oþ riptíman; and on þǽm riptíman ic secge þǽm ríperum, ‘Gaderiaþ ǽrest þone coccel, and bindaþ scéafmǽlum tó forbærnenne; and gaderiaþ þone hwǽte intó mínum berne.’”

Matthew 18: 23 – 34

            For þǽm is heofona ríce anlíc þǽm cyninge þe his þéowas gerádode.

            And þá hé þæt gerád sette, him wæs án bróht sé him sceolde tíen þúsend punda.  And þá hé næfde hwanon hé hit águlde, hine hét his hláford gesellan, and his wíf and his cild and eall þæt hé áhte.  Þá ástreahte se þéow hine and cwæþ, “Hláford, gehafa geþyld on mé, and ic hit þé eall ágielde.”  Þá gemiltsode se hláford him and forgeaf him þone gylt.

            Þá se þéowa út éode, hé gemétte his efenþéowan sé him sceolde án hund peninga; and hé nam hine þá and forþrysmode hine and cwæþ, “Ágief þæt þú mé scealt.”  And þá ástreahte his efenþéowa hine and bæd hine and þus cwæþ, “Geþyldiga, and ic hit þé eall ágiefe.”  Hé þá nolde; ac férde and wearp hine on cweartern, oþ þæt hé him eall ágéafe.

            Þá gesáwon his efenþéowas þæt, þá wurdon híe swíðe geunrótsode and cómon and sægdon hira hláforde ealle þá dǽde.  Þá clipode his hláford hine and cwæþ tó him, “Éalá mé bǽde; hú ne gebyrede þé gemiltsian þínum efenþéowan, swá swá ic þé gemiltsode?”  Þá wæs se hláford ierre, and sealde hine þǽm wítnerum, oþ þæt hé eall águlde.

            Swá déþ mén se heofonlica Fæder gif gé of éowerum heortum éowerum bróðrum ne forgiefaþ.

Matthew 25:1 – 12

            Þonne biþ beofona ríce gelíc þǽm tíen fǽmnum þe þá léohtfatu námon and férdon ongéan þone brýdguman and þá brýde.  Hira fíf wǽron dysige and fíf gléawe.  Ac þá fíf dysigan námon léohtfatu and ne námon nánne ele mid him; þá gléawan námon ele on hira fatum mid þǽm léohtfatum.

            Þá sé brýdguma ielde, þá hnappodon híe ealle and slépon.  Witodlíce tó middre nihte man hríemde and cwæþ, “Nú sé brýdguma cymþ; faraþ him tógéanes.”  Þá árison ealle þá fǽmnan and glengdon heora léohtfatu.

            Þá cwǽdon þá dysigan tó þǽm wísum, “Sellaþ ús of éowerum ele, for þǽm úru léohtfatu sind ácwencte.”  Þá andswarodon þá gléwan and cwǽdon, “Nese, þé lǽs þe wé and gé næbben genóh; gáþ tó þǽm cíependum, and bycgaþ éow ele.”

            Witodlíce þá híe férdon and woldon bycgan, þá cóm sé brýdguma, and þá þe gearwe wǽron éodon in mid him tó þǽm giftum, and séo duru wæs belocen.

            Þá æt níehstan common þá óðre fǽmnan and cwǽdon, “Dryhten, Dryhten, lǽt ús in.”  Þá andwarode hé heom and cwæþ, “Sóþ, ic éw secge, ne cann ic éow.”
