Series Overview
Why "Star Trek: Higher Calling"? Star Trek: Higher Calling is a series of stories, approximately episode-length, concerning the crew of the America class vessel, USS Utopia, NCC-74759. This ship was initially designated as a science vessel, as were all ships of her class, but after the Borg encounter of the USS Enterprise, the ship was refit with more tactical systems, and more powerful weapons, shields, and engines. The ship was unavailable for action during the incident at Wolf 359, but launched on 46039.3 for a short shakedown cruise under Captain Scilding.
After the Borg Incident, Starfleet wanted to make sure the Daltari would not attempt to take advantage of the situation, so the Utopia was sent to that region of space due to an increase in border skirmishes there.
The Daltari are a race that were once quite rich due to their rich dilithium deposits in their territories, but after 2285, their economy crashed after Admiral Kirk brought back a way to recrystallize dilithium, thereby bypassing the need to purchase large amounts of new dilithium. This was part of the reason for the Daltari War from 2295 - 2298, in which the USS Utopia NCC-1981 played an important role. Since that time, the Daltari have been relatively silent until 2366, when they began acquiring new weapons from a variety of cultures, and Starfleet began receiving reports of the increasing hostility of their empire.
The series concerns the adventures of the USS Utopia in handling this and further events, including the Dominion War, and how the crew handles each challenge. The captain lost his family in an attack on his home planet, and he must learn that he has a higher calling to fight for the rights of the free citizens of the Federation so they can live in peace and no one else has to lose their families like he lost his. The doctor must overcome her anxiety of being on a starship, the engineer struggles with his past, and the first officer struggles with his past 2 years of service.
