Uniforms

From the relative popularity and longevity of the Starfleet uniforms used from 2273-2351, Starfleet has redesigned its uniforms with that uniform design formula (jacket, tunic, undershirt).  The more recent uniform styling is kept on a jacket style reminiscent of the older Starfleet design.  A belt with a simple arrowhead is utilized, and the rank pips are placed on the right shoulder rank stripe.  As with recent uniforms, the uniforms are department color (red, gold, blue).  Females may choose to utilize a skirt instead of pants.

Starfleet officers have two new uniform variants, a vest and a 'readiness uniform.'  The vest is utilized during informal gatherings of officers who may still be on-duty or have just completed their duty shifts, but still need to be in uniform.  The standard officer jacket is preferred in any case, but the vest is still regulation.  The 'readiness' uniform can be utilized if an officer expects to be called to duty at a moment's notice, but in practice, it is used in more informal situations and gatherings amongst officers.

The dress uniforms are similar to the recent redesign which shortened the length of the uniform, felt by some officers to resemble too closely 'a dress.'  The lower black styling is removed, and a gold braid replaced the department color braid, as well as the cuffs and rank stripe.  The first dress uniform was soon redesigned with a thin break in it to include years of service pins.

The admiral's uniform is similar to the dress uniform, but with a UFP belt decoration, and pointed cuffs.  Female admirals have the option of wearing a skirt instead of pants.  The captain has two alternate jackets to use, with and without the rank stripe.  In practice, the rank stripe variant is more often used.

The chief engineer is in a busy position supervising the operations of a starship, repairing damage, upgrading systems, and the standard uniforms do not always conform to the realities of engineer life.  The chief engineer is issued an 'engineer's tunic', which is more loose-fitting, and a vest which allows more freedom of movement than a standard uniform.  The chief medical officer similarly has a doctor's tunic for use while on duty in sickbay.

Counselors are a recent addition to the senior staff of a starship, and in an effort to make them more approachable, Starfleet has authorized a number of variant uniforms for his/her use, which resemble the standard uniforms, but may seem less intimidating to younger officers.  Female counselors also have the option of utilizing a skirt instead of pants.
