"A Faire To Remember"
Brobdingnagian Bards

Probably one of the better known albums by the Bards, this CD has received numerous covers and releases at various events across the country. Mostly a collection of traditional favorites, this album isn't as strong as some of their later recordings.

A particular favorite faire song of mine is "Johnny Jump Up." Generally done as an up-tempo romp, the song languishes here, seeming to plod along. It is really a shame because if imbued with more energy and tempo this could have been a great rendition of the song.

The Bards made some really daring choices on this CD. Some work better than others. "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" was a solid choice for a cover. Having heard numerous covers, this is one of the better ones (complete with end commentary). The cover of "Scarborough Faire" doesn't come off as well though. Simon & Garfunkle are a tough act to cover and I'm not certain that this was a strong choice to spotlight what the Bards are really capable of.

Still, there are some shining moments of brilliance on this album. "If I Had a Million Ducats" is a fun tune that lets the Bards do what they do best, have fun. The lyrics are fun and you might find yourself chuckling out loud while you listen. This sort of song has always seemed to be the Bard's strong point. When these fellows sink their teeth into a song like this, the results are wonderful to behold.

Overall, this CD is a bit of a mixed bag. There are some really strong tunes on here and even a bit of bit of clever spoken word. Few groups include bits of comedy anymore, fewer still do it well. Comedy and lightheartedness seem to be things that the Brobdingnagian Bards do quite well.
