About the author

I am the mother of five children (Personal Page) and recently obtained my Bachelor of Science Degree in Human Services. My course work required me to read and write, read and write, and read and write some more. This page contains links to research papers and reaction papers I wrote on topics relating to disabilities, human services, family issues and child development.  I am home schooling my children at this point in my life.  However, some day I hope to help children with disabilities in either a teaching or counseling capacity.  Please let me know your comments (good or bad). I would like to know if any of them were beneficial or thought provoking.

A research paper about Sensory Integration Dysfunction. This paper, entitled "Sensory Integration Dysfunction: The Misunderstood, Misdiagnosed and Unseen Disability," does have a lot of gif files and may take a little time to download. If you would like, I have provided a text version for your convenience. It should be noted, though, that the paper is better understood with the gif files.

Here are FAQ's and links regarding Sensory Integration Dysfunction.

Zachary, who has Verbal Speech Apraxia (a neurological speech disorder) and Sensory Integration Dysfunction, is talking on this page to show how well he is doing. This page will be updated on a monthly basis, so bookmark it for future use. To learn more about Apraxia, please go to the Apraxia-Kids WebPage. Verbal apraxia is when the signals from the brain to the mouth are transmitted incorrectly. An example would be if your brain was the XYZ Cable Company and your mouth was the television. The XYZ Cable Company is sending the correct signal to your television. The television is working fine; however, it is not receiving the correct signal to see what is on the screen. The problem is with the descrambler between XYZ Cable Company and the television.

Recommended reading: "So, Stick a Geranium in Your Hat and Be Happy" by Barbara Johnson. A special quote from her book:

ACCEPTANCE

Acceptance is the answer to all my problems today. When I am disturbed, it is because I find some person, place, thing, or situation--Some fact of my life--unacceptable to me, and I can find no serenity until I accept that Person, place, thing, or situation as being exactly the way it is supposed to be at this moment, Nothing, absolutely nothing happens in God's world by mistake. Unless I accept life completely on life's terms, I cannot be happy. I need to concentrate not so much on what needs to be changed in the world as on what needs to be changed in me and in my attitudes. --Source Unknown.
