To set up and use the WS-ftp File Transfer Program 1. Double-click on the WS-FTP icon. You will see this interface:
2. The Profile Name is given to you by your Internet provider. Click on the "New" button and type in the name provided. After you initially type it in, you should be able to find it by selecting the "down" arrow to the right of the "Profile Name" window. 3. In HostName/Address, type in the name given you by your Internet provider, or select it from the pull down menu if it is already there. 4. In Host_Type, select Automatic detect from the pull-down menu by clicking on the down arrow. 5. In User Id, type your server account name without the extension if there is one. 6. In Password, type in your password given to you by your provider to access the account. Asterisks will show in place of your password to keep your password hidden. 7. Click on OK. 8. You will get a split screen.
The left side shows files that are on the PC you are using; the right side (which is blank now) shows files that are in your directory in your Internet account. (If you had typed in another server name and you have an account on that server) you would, of course, be in a different server directory.) 9.To get in the appropriate directory or drive: The "Local System" window at the left top shows the current directory on the computer you are using. The "Remote System" window at the right top shows your mason account folders and files. If you double click the green arrow you will go to a higher level in the current directory. If you want to go to the a: or other drive, scroll down the left window until you come to the correct drive. Then click until the drive appears in the appropriate window : Local or Remote System. Or select the ChgDir button and type in the drive you want. Your files will appear. Double click the appropriate folder you need to use to get your files. Highlight the file you want to send to your mason account by clicking on it once. Then select the right arrow button to send it to your mason account on the Remote System. (You can also send files from your server account to your local drive.) 10. Upload Files From Hard Drive to your server account: Notice the three circles below the two directory windows which are named ASCII, binary, auto. If you select binary, you can transfer text files, graphic files, spreadsheet files, etc. I recommend you use the "binary" option. To upload JAVA, perl, and cgi scripts, use the ASCII option to avoid tags such as spacing. a) Highlight the file in the left column (on the computer you are using) that you want to transfer. (Be sure you have the right drive and directory. The correct drive and directory, for sending and receiving, are displayed in the "Local System" and "Remote System" windows.) b) In the middle of the window, you will see a button with a right arrow and a left arrow on it. Click on the right arrow. c) The file will now show up on the list on the right (the list of files in your server account). 12. Download Files From your Server Account to a Local Drive a) Highlight the file in the right column that you want to transfer. If it is in a subdirectory in your account, click first on the name of the subdirectory in the box above the list of files. b) In the middle of the window, you will see a button with a left arrow on it. Click on the left arrow . c) The file will now show up on the list on the left . Notice you also have options to delete, rename files and make new directories. Highlight the file you want to rename or delete and select the appropriate function. You might want to rename a file as "oldfilename" as a precaution before you delete it. You can change directories. Click the up arrow at the top of the
directory to get to a higher level in your directory structure.
You can scroll up and down to the list of directories if you click on the
up or down arrow within a directory window. You can also view selected
ASCII/DOS/HTML text if you choose that option
