Using short modern and classic scripts, students will create exciting characters from literature, put together costuming, add in music, props, and sets (while learning where the term “Break a Leg!” actually came from!) and create an incredible show that will have everyone in the audience rising for a standing O. Come on and join us for this fun-filled tour through the exciting world of theatre! When: 8 weeks beginning Thursday Sept. 24—Nov. 12 Time: 2:45-3:45 pm Cost: $85.

Funny Business For ages 10 & up (age 9 with special permission) Everyone thinks comedy is easier than drama, right? Wrong! Since everyone has a different idea of that they think is funny, trying to reach as many people as possible in the audience is the goal. For big laughs, comedy relies on exaggeration, strong characters, incongruity and surprise. In this class, students will learn all about the highs and lows of comedy while exploring many different styles including parody, farce, melodrama, improv. and more. Using short comedic plays and skits (scripted material), students will take ownership of the class, deciding on settings, props, & costuming, combine all of that with the process of theatre (learning dialogue, learning how to pace line delivery, stage movement, etc) and create a complete show full of so much “Funny Business” the audience can’t help but leave with a smile on their faces. Add in a hilarious musical opening number and no one will doubt you have what it takes to be a comedy star! When: 8 weeks beginning Tuesday Sept. 22—November 10th Time: 2:30-4:00 pm Cost: $120.

Homeschool Scholarships

The VCU School of Engineering has renewed the Virginia Homeschool Scholarship. This tuition assistance scholarship will be awarded to a student who comes from a homeschool environment and enrolls as a first time freshman in any department of the School of Engineering in the fall semester of 2009.
The scholarship provides $2,500 to $3,500 per year depending upon the qualifications of the student. Renewal of the scholarship after the first year is conditional upon the student's continuing full time enrollment in the VCU School of Engineering and maintenance of a cumulative 3.0 GPA.
The maximum term of the scholarship is eight semesters. In accordance with University policy, this scholarship will be reduced only by the value of need-based tuition assistance awarded to the student by the University. It can be combined with other merit-based scholarships including those offered by VCU. Awardees will be selected by the School of Engineering based on the student's academic and personal qualifications and promise.
In order to be considered for this scholarship, the student must apply for admission to VCU. Dean Russel Jamison says, "The School of Engineering at VCU offers a dynamic and challenging environment for the study of engineering in a diverse, urban setting. We strive to help our students realize their full potential in a personal, caring atmosphere. At VCU we provide "engineering education on a human scale" and will continue to do so as our enrollment grows." "We want to be the first choice for homeschooled students who wish to continue their post-secondary education in engineering. We recognize the unique value of the homeschooling experience in preparing students for success in engineering."
