The American Civil War Center at
Historic Tredegar, 490 Tregedar St, is holding a Homeschool Day on
Friday, November 6, 10am-2pm. Geared for ages 5-15. One hour break at
11:30 a.m.; feel free to bring lunch. Programs will be held in the
museums as well as outdoors on the Historic Tredegar campus.
In “A Woman's War,” students will learn about the exciting roles of such
women as Clara Barton, Harriet Tubman, Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, and
Harriet Beecher Stowe; they will also make a quilt square.
In “Common Soldier,” an interactive, living history program, students
will explore life in camp on the drill field, the march, and the
all-too-real battlefield.
In “The Cannon's Roar,” students will use historically accurate
equipment to role-play an eight-member artillery, gaining in the process
a better understanding of the importance of cannon and the necessary
mathematics involved in their use.
Finally, in “Stations,” students will be given time at several learning
stations to try their hands at a variety of additional activities
related to the Civil War era.

The Organization of
Virginia Homeschoolers is
holding a seminar on Homeschooling and College Entrance on Wed, Nov. 11
at the Science Museum of Virginia. Get all the information you need to
plan a successful high school experience and negotiate the college
admissions process. Sessions include Homeschooling the High School
Years, Transcripts without Tears, College Admissions Q & A,
Investigating Opportunities for Financial Aid and Community College
Education for Homeschoolers. Join experienced homeschool parents and
college representatives from The University of Richmond, Virginia
Commonwealth University, Shenandoah University, Old Dominion University,
and Virginia Tech, as well as the Assistant Director for Financial Aid
for the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia and
representatives from Virginia's community college system.

Colonial Williamsburg will
again hold its
Homeschooler Experience in February 2010. Learn
about running a household and preparing foods, colonial diversions and
pastimes as well as education and apprenticeships at the Benjamin Powell
House. This original 18th-century site will open exclusively for spring
participants in our Homeschooler Experience. Explore our shops of our
various tradespeople, such as the Blacksmith, Cabinetmaker, Silversmith,
Milliner, and Tailor, to find out what kind of work you might have done
once you finished your apprenticeship.

Jamestown Settlement
and Yorktown Victory Center will again hold their
Homeschool Program in February 2010. Your homeschool students will love discovering the sights and sounds of the
17th and 18th centuries while learning about their nation’s history. And
you will love the variety of curriculum-based education programs offered
for a range of grade levels – all taught by trained museum educators.

The Organization of Virginia Homeschoolers is holding its 2010 Conference and Resource Fair on March 12-13 at The Cultural Arts Center at Glen Allen. Homeschoolers and Historic Houses will be held again in March 2010 at Agecroft Hall and Wilton House
Museum. It offer homeschoolers an opportunity to explore America’s
colonial and British roots during this special day-long program. The
Homeschoolers and Historic Houses program will include tours of both
museums, up-close and hands-on study of reproduction artifacts, historic
games and more. Students will discover what life was like in England
during the Tudor and Stuart years of the sixteenth and seventeenth
centuries and be able to compare these discoveries with life in Virginia
during the eighteenth century.
Cost per student is $8 (ages 8 & older); $4 (ages 3-7); free for ages 2
& under; cost per adult is $8.

The Richmond Area Homeschool Graduation for 2010 will be on Saturday, May 29, 2010 at Swift Creek Baptist Church in Midlothian. This is a formal, cap and gown ceremony limited to 60 graduates. Parents must participate in the planning and execution of the event. A $50 deposit is required at the time of sign up; total cost should be less than $150.
