There will be a Homeschool swim on Tuesday, June 9, 11am-4pm at Shady Acres Pool, 10401 Dakins Drive. There is a $3/guest fee per person - children 2 yrs. and younger are free.  There are swings, sand, and a snack bar with food/snacks/drinks.  You are also welcomed to bring a picnic lunch of your own!

The Virginia Historical Society, corner of Kensington Avenue and North Boulevard, Richmond, is holding FREE educational programs for homeschool groups on Tuesdays and Thursdays in June and July 2009. Programs begin at 2pm. Three one-hour interactive presentations are available, and are appropriate for children of all ages:

Virginia and the Westward Movement. This program examines the nineteenth-century movement of Virginians to the West and their contributions to settling the American frontier. Using reproductions of objects that might have been found on a settler's Conestoga wagon, students interpret the great migration from Virginia in the decades before the Civil War.
Teaching with Photographs. Using turn-of-the-century photographs, this program is designed to allow students to examine changes in Virginia's society and politics. Students will explore context clues from primary source images to develop an awareness of the changes that occured across the commonwealth during the early 1900s.
Pocahontas and the Powhatan Nation. Students will learn about the culture of Powhatan Indians and the various roles played by women, men, and children in their society. The use of replica artifacts helps students understand myths and truths, tools and clothing, and popular images from Pocahontas's time. Students will gain a greater understanding of Virginia's original inhabiants.

HEAV is holding their annual conference on June 11, 12, and 13, 2009 at the Richmond Convention Center. Aurora, a mechanical engineer, airplane pilot, astronomer, university engineering instructor, and rocket scientist, is holding a Science Camp and RoboCamp on Wednesday, June 15 to Friday, June 17 at Richmond at Commonwealth University:

Science Camp (For Kids Ages 7-12 years). Colonial Williamsburg is once again holding its Homeschooler Experience Sept 12–27. Learn about running a household and preparing foods, colonial diversions and pastimes as well as education and apprenticeships at the Benjamin Powell House. This original 18th-century site will open exclusively for spring participants in our Homeschooler Experience. Explore our shops of our various tradespeople, such as the Blacksmith, Cabinetmaker, Silversmith, Milliner, and Tailor, to find out what kind of work you might have done once you finished your apprenticeship.

Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Victory Center are once again holding their Homeschool Program Sept 12-27. Your homeschool students will love discovering the sights and sounds of the 17th and 18th centuries while learning about their nation’s history. And you will love the variety of curriculum-based education programs offered for a range of grade levels – all taught by trained museum educators.
Register in advance to ensure a place ph (757) 253-4939 and preregister for hands-on programs and guided tours (by 5pm 3 business days prior to program/tour). Walk-ins will be accepted if space is available.

Homeschoolers and Historic Houses will be held again in October at Agecroft Hall and Wilton House Museum. It offer homeschoolers an opportunity to explore America’s colonial and British roots during this special day-long program. The Homeschoolers and Historic Houses program will include tours of both museums, up-close and hands-on study of reproduction artifacts, historic games and more. Students will discover what life was like in England during the Tudor and Stuart years of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and be able to compare these discoveries with life in Virginia during the eighteenth century.
Cost per student is $8 (ages 8 & older); $4 (ages 3-7); free for ages 2 & under; cost per adult is $8.

The Mariners' Museum 100 Museum Dr., Newport News, has Dollar Days which offer your family the opportunity to visit The Mariners' Museum at a reduced rate while learning how the Museum can complement your homeschool education.
