Pamplin Historical Park & The National Museum of the Civil War Soldier near Petersburg offers a special field trip program for home school families and groups! These programs are specifically designed for children at grade levels 4-12. Programs include: A Soldier's Life, Plantation Life, and Civil War Battles. The tour includes time to visit the Duty Called Me Here exhibit. Home School Tour Schedule: Tuesdays and Thursdays January 6 - 29, 2009, 10am-3pm.

Richmond Regional Home Educators is holding a Spelling Bee on Thurs, Jan. 8, 2009 1pm at the Staples Mill Road Baptist Church, 10101 Staples Mill Rd, Glen Allen. Spellers through 8th grade are invited to this competition with the top two winners advancing to the Richmond Times-Dispatch Homeschool Division Bee held later in January in the Richmond area. Richmond Regional Home Educators is also holding a National Geographic Geography Bee on Friday, Jan. 9th 1PM at Grace Gospel Chapel, 1201 Spirea Rd, Midlothian.  It is for 4th-8th grade homeschooled students, who haven't already been in any other 2009 National Geographic Geography Bee. The Virginia Air and Space Center, 600 Settlers Landing Rd, Hampton, is having a Camp-In for homeschool students Jan 9-10, 2009, from 5pm-10am. Program includes  • Science demonstrations • Event Patch • Late night snack and breakfast • Exciting grade level appropriate hands-on activities:

Astronaut Training Camp (4-6 years old): Have your little one train like an astronaut!!!
Grades 2-3: Rockets and Planet Exploration!!!
Grades 4-5: Rocket design and Rovers!!!
Grades 6-8: Space Shuttle Launch & Mission Control Simulator!!!

Pocahontas State Park is holding the following Homeschool Programs. All programs begin at 10:30am (except the May 13 Night Hike) are approximately 2 hours long and involve outdoor exploration. Most also include a moderate hike. Please wear proper clothing and shoes and bring a picnic lunch!

Adventures Discovery Workshops. (ages 5-9). Jan 15- Hide and Seek. Discover predator/prey relationships with a fun game in the woods. Feb 12-Wonderful Worms. Learn about this lowly animal and help us make a worm farm for the nature center. Mar 5-Feeding Time. Help us feed the animals in the Center. Apr 2-Animal Architects. Find out who builds their homes and how we can help. May 7-My Life as a Tree. Explore the cycle of life through a tree.

Outdoor Skills Adventure Workshops. (ages 10 and up). Jan 14 - Intro to Nature and Outdoor Exploration. Jan 28 - Hiking Ethics and Leave No Trace. Feb 11 - Basic Outdoor Cooking. $10/person. Discover the basics of cooking on a campfire. Lunch provided. Feb 25 - Orienteering with Map and Compass. Mar 11 - Orienteering Course. Orienteering with GPS. Mar 25 - Letterboxing. We will plan, create and hide our very own Pocahontas Homeschool Explorers letterbox for others to find! Apr 22 - Animal Tracking. Tracking lures us on an amazing journey into the world of nature and encourages us to open all our senses to it's subtle clues. May 6 - Advanced Outdoor Cooking. $10/person. Step it up a notch with some gourmet recipes and traditional equipment. Lunch provided.

Night Hike and Campfire. May 13, 8pm.  All Ages! Let's end this series with a guided hike to see how well our senses work at night. We'll end with s'mores around the campfire.

Nauticus, One Waterside Dr., Norfolk, is holding its 2nd Annual Homeschool Day on January 21, 2009,10am – 5pm. Workshops will include: Boats Afloat (Buoyancy and density), Cool Chemistry, and It IS easy being green recycling workshop. Many other programs will be going on throughout the day to include Battle Blast, Shark Touch, Science on a Sphere, and more! See their NEW 2,000 gallon-pool with horseshoe crabs you can touch, as well as spider crabs, sea stars, whelks, and small fish species that you can discover. Watch the Living Sea movie on our giant screen movie theater.

The Virginia Living Museum, 524 J. Clyde Morris Blvd., Newport News, is holding a Homeschool Day on January 28, 2009. They’ll be presenting a selection of fun and engaging classroom programs that highlight important Natural Science and Earth Science concepts for elementary and middle school grades. In addition to those learning opportunities, there will be displays by NASA, the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary (NOAA) and the Chesapeake Bay National Estaurine Research Reserve (NOAA). Participants can also delve into the world of microbes in our newest changing exhibit, "Microbes: Invisbile Invaders, Amazing Allies." The museum's science education programs have been endorsed by the Virginia Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Education and the National Science Foundation. Advance registration is required.

"Creating an Orderly Home". Jan. 29, 2009, 1-5pm. Peace--not perfection--is the key to an orderly home. Find out how to declutter, create an environment conductive to learning, and have the type of home you have always wanted by learning to let go, categorize, use space efficiently, and maintain order. Led by Florence Feldman, HEAV's convention director.

HEAV is holding an SAT Essay Prep Workshop on Thurs, Feb 12, 2009, 10am-2:30pm at their office, 2248 G Dabney Road. Janice Campbell's Beat-the-Clock Essay workshop offers just what your student will need to overcome writer's block and create an easy-to-read, well-organized essay--within a short time! During this four-hour workshop, students will write two essays and will leave with the practical tools they need to write timed essays, plus techniques they will be able to apply to any type of writing. The workshop is designed for high school and advanced intermediate students (and for parents who want to improve their own writing and evaluation skills). Janice Campbell has homeschooled since the late 1980s, and has successfully guided her oldest sons into (and through) college.
What to Bring: Hard-backed binder, notebook, or clipboard with paper #2 pencils (at least 2), watch, bag lunch & drink.

The Virginia War Memorial, 621 S. Belvidere St, is holding a Homeschool Program on Thurs, Feb 12, and Tues, May 19, starting at 10am (choose one). This hour and a half presentation is designed for middle and high school age students and includes a short history and purpose of the Memorial, an oral history documentary film, a tour of the Shrine of Memory, name search, and an optional wreath laying ceremony.

The 2009 Richmond Homeschool Prom will be on Saturday, May 9 from 7-11 pm at Shady Grove United Methodist Church, 8209 Shady Grove Rd, Mechanicsville. The prom theme is "An Evening in the Orient" and is open to all homeschooled students in high school including rising 9th graders. REACH is holding its 7th annual Homeschool Formal on the 19th of May at the Ball Room in the Great Wolf Lodge in Williamsburg, 5:30pm-10:30pm. It is for all teens 13 and up. You do not need to be a member of REACH to attend the Formal. There is a dress code, and finger food and punch will be available. 25 chaperones will be admitted free.
Cost $45 per teen until Feb 20th. $50 per teen Feb 21-Mar 15. $60 per teen Mar 16-May 5. Let Wanda know if you are a senior when you pay for your ticket.

The Organization of Virginia Homeschoolers is holding their Conference May 22-23, 2009 at the Science Museum of Virginia, 2500 West Broad St. The featured speaker will be presenter-educator Kathleen Melin, author of By Heart: A Mother's Story of Children and Learning at Home. The conference program includes workshops, curriculum and resource fair and much more.

The Home Educators of Richmond will be holding a graduation ceremony on May 30, 2009, at a local Richmond area church. Thus far, there are 20 grads signed up to participate in this ceremony. This will be a cap and gown ceremony, with student speakers and a keynote speaker.  If you are interested in being part of this graduation ceremony, please contact Janet.

HEAV is holding their annual conference on June 11, 12, and 13, 2009 at the Richmond Convention Center.  Voddie Baucham will be their keynote speaker.
