ElderFriends is a volunteer based program providing outreach, self advocacy, and companionship to isolated Elders in the greater Richmond, Virginia area. They are looking for children/teenagers to visit with an elder 3-4 times a week and develop a friendship with them that is supported by the ElderFriends program.

The goal of the Apprentice Ecologist Initiative™ is to engage hundreds of kids and teens from around the world in litter cleanup projects.
How to become an Apprentice Ecologist™ and get a personalized Certificate of Achievement signed by a Ph.D. in Ecology: Take a trip to a mountain, river, shoreline, beach, park, or wilderness area with friends or family. Pick up litter and take a few digital photos of your cleanup in action. E-mail an essay about your trip, your favorite photo, and your name, age, and address (for certificate). Your story will then be published on the Nicodemus Wilderness Project website, and you wil be awarded with an official certificate.

Hanover Youth Service Council
The Hanover Youth Services Council (HYSC) is a group of middle and high school students selected from across the county whose purpose is to promote community involvement and volunteerism among the youth of Hanover County. Service projects have included a literacy project at a local library, park beautification, volunteering at a therapeutic recreation program for adults with mental disabilities and helping at a respite care facility for children with physical and mental disabilities. Applications for membership to the HYSC are accepted each spring.

Brandermill Woods Assisted Living and Health Care Center have volunteer opportunities for groups and individuals (minimum age 14 without parental supervision). Some of their various activities include but are not limited to: bingo, crafts, exercise class, gardening, movies, music therapy, room visits and social gatherings.

Chattering Children
Chattering Children, a special school for deaf children with a focus on learning to speak, are looking for homeschool children in the 6-8 range to interact with their 5-8 year old two mornings per week. Children in their program use cochelar implants to help them hear and do not learn sign language. The teachers are trained and certified teachers of the deaf with a background in elementary education.
