1970 Plymouth Duster
This was my second car. The '67Dart GT wasn't really reliable so I figured it was time to look for something else. I saw this Duster in the Sunday Detroit News in April of 1976. It was advertised with 49,000 miles and in nice condition, 225 3spd stick on the floor with buckets, asking $975. I'd never really driven a stick before, at least in normal traffic, but after seeing the car, it was worth a try. The current owner said that he bought it from the original owner, a female with high heels, thus the hole in the carpet under the clutch. I offered him $925 and he took it. My mom (she didn't know how to drive a stick either) and I took a cab the next day to pick it up. My mom and I trying to get this car home in afternoon rush hour, boy was that fun! I promptly changed the wheels and tires since it had white walls and the standard Duster hub caps. I added an AM/FM stereo and I was good to go. Notice the Direct Connection front spoiler, got a good deal on it so I threw it on. This little slant six car could do holeshots (which I liked to do on a regular basis 'cause it made everyone think it had a 340). I remember the time I was a few blocks from home and I did a holeshot and the car died. My friend's and I pushed it home and one of my friends older brothers saw us under the hood and walked up. After a few minutes he said, "Here's the problem." and pulled a wrench out that was wedged between the alternator and the inner fender, shorting out the engine. I had forgotten the wrench under the hood before. I drove this car until May 1977, when I traded it in on my new 1977 Aspen R/T Super Pak. I got $1150 for it, not bad for driving it for a year and only paying $925. In fact, when I turned it in for trade, a guy bought it before I even had my license plate off!
