My father, John Schaupp, had served in the Russian army and now had his discharge papers from the army. He decided to come to Canada in 1909. His mother wept as she didn't want him to leave his homeland Bessarabia, Russia, knowing she would never see him again. He said to her, "Mother, if you don't let me go to Canada then you will have to see me go to war." as there was rumblings of war.

He wanted to come to Canada thinking there was a better way to making a living than what they had in Russia.

My Mother, Maria Mix, also came to Canada in 1909 with her sister, Catherine. These two sisters came because they had some older married sisters who had come to Canada--Sofia married to Gustave Lick and Caroline married to Demitrius Econom. Also a brother, Christian Mix, who was married was in Canada but they had no idea where he was at the time.

Life was very hard for my Mother as well as the rest of the siblings. She had to get herself a job, house cleaning. Because she couldn't speak English and the employer couldn't speak German, they couldn't communicate. Mother was sent home with a note. She had no idea what it said, but when she came back to where she was staying, they read the note. Then they began to laugh saying, "You are fired." My Mother cried and wanted to die. She felt she couldn't live in Canada and didn't want to go back to Romania.

Esther, John, Albert, Mary (Mix), Elsie Schaupp - 1944

She did get a job later at Langdon Hotel out of the city where they could speak German. Her brother, Jacob Mix, quit his job in Calgary and worked at Langdon Hotel also, so that his sister wouldn't be alone. Maria Mix and John Schaupp met and were married on 19 November 1909.
