Congressman Bob Clement (D-Tennessee) enjoyed portraying his hero, James Knox Polk on Tennaissance's stage. Certainly no stranger to the stage, Clement played Dr. Lyman Hall in a Washington Symphony production of 1776 at Constitution Hall and for the Pull-Tight Players in Franklin, Tennessee.
Definitely no stranger to politics as the Tennessee Congressman for the 5th Congressional District, Clement identified with Polk's challenges as a public servant of the people. In the words of Edmund Burke, a member of the British Parliament as quoted by Dr. Hall in 1776: "...A representative owes the People, not only his industry, but his judgment -- and he betrays them if he sacrifices it to their opinion." Along with a lengthy list of legislative accomplishments, Clement has been honored nationally for his work in music and arts education.
