These icons are just portraits, sometimes self–portraits, sometimes not. If you’ve come across any portrait favicons in your travels, please send them my way.

What can you say? He’s the master! The little blue hat shows up again in
a great portrait icon that replicates the image of his book. The white background,
rather than transparent, doesn’t look as good on a grey toolbar/menu. Strange
that multiple sizes are provided but the actual image doesn’t change size.

Great cartoon portrait; lots of character. Looks great even at the small size.
adactio.com
Photo portrait of the site’s author. Looks like the same photo is used on the site About
page. The face isn’t easy to see at a 16 pixel size, but it stands out. A 32 pixel
version would be nice to see.

A snippet of the image from the site masthead. Works really well at the small size and with
just 16 colors. Does a great job of reinforcing the masthead theme.

Caught this one just before the site redesigned. Nice portrait photo of someone smoking
a pipe in just black & white photography. The 32 pixel icon still looks good when
shrunk by the browser down to 16.

Well, I guess when you have a site about an individual person, using their face for the
favicon just makes sense. Reasonable likeness (for those that follow her, I’m sure
it’s very recognizable) even at 16px. Cropping the picture in close to the
face really helps. For a site like this, they really should have provided additional
icon sizes, at least a 32px version.

Don’t know if this is a self portrait or just a photo, but fits with the
imagry used on the site masthead. Interesting monochrome color and looks good.

Wow. I liked this one a lot as soon as I saw it; then I found out how it ties into the site design and I liked
it even more. First, I really like the deep monochrome color used in the icon; matches the site perfectly.
Go into the site and check out the navigation for seeing the band members; it uses a picture of each
member’s eye! Looks like Chris’ was used for the favicon. Very cool.

This is a great icon! The home page for this personal site uses the same photograph of the site’s subject.
The icon is a great adaptation of the photograph. I really like the way the subject is cropped off on the right
side allowing some background to show through on the left. Very nice composition. And to make it even better,
look at all of the icon sizes provided! Excellent, one of my favorites!

I just love it when people take advantage of varying icon sizes to present an image differently. The image for this
icon (is it a self portrait?) comes from the site masthead along with the bright blue background from the site.
Great pixel graphic and love the way you get to see more of it with larger icons.

Normally I’d say that an image like this ended up too blurry when it was shrunk down to 16px, but in this
case I think it works really well. By being blurry, it makes the red shirt stand out even more. The same image is
used on the main page of the site where you can see all of the details. I like the way this one works.

I really like the logo for the site; the shades and goatee fit the image of the site well. Unfortunately, I think
too much of the logo was brought into favicon. Specificially, the border around the face makes the icon too busy
especially when you see that it’s trying to convey the same tilted look as the main logo. Leaving that out
would have allowed the facial image to stand out more, maybe even be a bit larger.

I know this is a web design company and they use people as the main image on their site, but I’m not sure why
they are using a woman’s eye as their favicon. Having said that, the image looks great and is very clear.
Almost looks like that eye is staring right at you.

A self’portrait drawing of Wil Wheaton; is his forehead really that big? :) The background color from the
site to frame the picture. Very recognizable, not from the sense that it really looks like him, but that it’s
easy to pick out when displayed in the browser.

Ben is an an athelete, adventurer and motivational speaker. The site masthead has amazing photography of Ben’s
adventures, and the favicon is taken from one of those pictures. Perfect choice. The file is a PNG graphic saved
with a .GIF extension; I think IE users will miss out on this great image as a result.

A nice cartoon–style portrait icon. I’m amazed that these are done with only 16 colors, they look
really nice. I also like the cropping done for the 16px version, leaving the full image for the 32px icon. If
the entire face were used for the 16px version, it would have lost all detail. This way, there’s a bit if
intrigue about the rest of the face. :)
northspace.com
A nice portrait favicon at 32px. I like the color theme used and the image croping
keeps it interesting. The colors don’t match the current site design, however,
but it still works.

I can’t put my finger on it exactly, but I think this is a really great portrait icon. Maybe
it’s because the image is inverted (white on color); maybe because the cropping job is so
good; maybe because it’s still very clear at all sizes. Whatever the reason, I think this
favicon is one of the better ones in the portrait category.

Portrait icon using the logo and color scheme of the site. Nice icon and fits the simple
design of the site. Would have been nice to see aditional sizes.

The favicon is taken from the site masthead, zeroing in on the face. For such a detailed
cartoon, the 16px version really turns out nicely. The cartoon is so nice, though, I wish
they had included larger sizes to let more of the detail come through.

A good black and white portrait icon…although he looks a bit angry! :-)
This was taken with a Logitech greyscale Quickcam; look what you can do with simple
technology! It looks like the site has gone through a recent redesign and looks great.
There’s a new self portrait illustration to match the new site; perhaps it’s
time to update the favicon?

This company does research for credit unions, so it makes sense that the father of
US credit unions in its site name and favicon. The image works well and I like the
way they used the site color as the background for the image; great backdrop for a
black and white image. I only wish they had created a 32px version.
