Dear Parents,

Welcome to Kindergarten! I would like to share some important information with you in order to assist your child in making a smooth transition to Morley School.

SCHEDULE FOR KINDERGARTEN

          Mon., Tues., Thurs., Fri.             8:30 a.m. - 3:20 p.m.

          Wed.                                        8:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

I will meet the children each day on the Kindergarten playground at 8:20 a.m. The children will also be dismissed from the playground when an authorized adult comes to pick them up. This is a comfortable place to say our hellos and good-byes . . . a nice way to begin and end each day! If you have already opted for an 11:30 dismissal this will also be your meeting spot. Those children who take the bus will be met by an adult and walked to the Kindergarten playground to meet us each morning. They will be escorted to their bus at dismissal time. In the event of rain, please plan to drop your child off no earlier than 8:30, as children are not allowed in the building (other than those in Morley Day Care) before that time.

If there is any change in your child’s dismissal plans (i.e. going home with a friend, being picked up by a different adult, not taking the bus home, etc.), please send in a note. We are keeping track of many children and this will help make things run smoothly and safely at dismissal. Thanks!

BACKPACKS

Please have your child bring a backpack to school every day. Names should be placed on a very visible location. Please be sure the backpack is big enough to hold Kindergarten projects and easy enough for little fingers to open and close. Each child will be given an 8 1/2” x 11” pocket folder, which will be kept (and needs to fit) in his/her backpack to carry papers and notices back and forth from school. It is very important for you to check your child’s backpack every day!

ASK ME ABOUT

You will be receiving a weekly “Ask Me About” newsletter, which will be your child’s way of keeping you up to date on class activities and units studied. Please use this weekly “homework” as an opportunity to let your child talk with you about our weekly activities in class. It is also my way of keeping you informed of any upcoming events or needs. Be sure to look for it every week!

SNACK & COOKING

I will provide the children with a daily morning snack, which will consist of different kinds of fruits, vegetables or crackers. There will also be opportunities for the children to create their snacks! Cooking is a fun and valuable learning experience in Kindergarten and we make it an integrated part of our curriculum every chance we get! Please send in $23.00 in a sealed, labeled envelope to cover the cost of snacks and cooking for the year (checks made payable to Debbie Abraham,). Thank you!

BIRTHDAYS

Birthday celebrations, holiday parties and teacher “surprises” will be times when your child may be given something “sweet” to eat in school. These times will be infrequent. However, if you have any objections to this please let me know. Be assured good eating habits and nutritional foods will be stressed all year as part of our health curriculum. If your child would like to share a birthday treat with the class drop me a note to confirm the date on which you are bringing the treat. For those children with allergy concerns or dietary restrictions, please send in a supply of “favorite safe treats” to have on hand.

 CLASS BEARS

Our favorite class friends would love to come to visit each and every one of you for a sleep-over! The bear will be loaned out on a regular basis, along with a journal in which you and your child may record the adventures of the evening. Please help your child by recording his/her own words and descriptions of this enjoyable time together. Don’t worry . . . they don’t eat much and they go to bed early!

LUNCH AND RECESS

We will be eating lunch each day in the cafeteria at 12:30 p.m. If you choose to send in any prepackaged foods, please make a small “snip” in corners, etc., in order for your child to open bags, cups, etc. easily. (Information regarding the purchase of cafeteria lunches will be included in the “Morley First Day Packet”).

We will be going outside for recess every day. Please dress your child for  the weather, as well as for running, climbing and probably getting dirty, too!

Have your child put on his/her own coat, socks and shoes, and encourage him/her to practice zipping and buttoning. We are working on all of these skills this year and encourage independence in everything we do in Kindergarten!

LABELS

Please put your child’s name in coats, sweaters, boots, and lunch boxes. Rain slickers, jean jackets, mittens, and hats all look alike!

CALLING ALL VOLUNTEERS

You will receive a volunteer form in September. I can always use an extra pair of hands! Anyone interested in helping out in the classroom working with children or behind the scenes cutting, pasting and putting books together, please fill it out and return it to me . I will be putting a schedule together soon. Thank you!

QUIET TIME

Each day, after lunch and recess, we will have a quiet time, where children will have time to quietly look at books, listen to music, rest and relax. They can keep a book from home in their cubbies to read during this time.

I look forward to getting to know you and your child and having a great year together!
