The Hound of Baskervilles

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

We read the Hound of the Baskervilles out loud and we both stop and ask questions along the way. I found a great site from a teacher of 9th grade to help facilitate our discussions. It is a difficult read in that it is very Victorian. All-in-All it's a good read. Nov 02

If you need more info on Sherlock the first url is for you but if you want to learn about the author then here is the best site.

I've also found a great set of questions and am putting them up I've yet to here back from the teacher who put them up so I may have to take them down.

The Borrowers

Mary Norton

An Interesting read but not really what I or A. expected. I wanted a different ending and I don't think Andrew liked the ending either. Good luck in finding a good page to go with these books. Jan 03

Finding Forrester

James Ellison

Of Course there was a book that was added to the outloud read section as I thought. There always is room for a book that makes the student want more not just from the book but from oneself.

Finding Forrester was read outloud by not just me but by Andrew. He wanted to do it and enjoy it as much as me. We not only read this book but watched it and analyzed the differences between the two. It was education for both of us. I suggest to everyone to find a book they enjoy and then find the movie and see which one they prefer or if they like both. It was soo much fun. 12.02

The Westing Game

 Ellen Raskin.

Good luck in finding a page about this author or a good site on this book. This has been apparently made into a movie. But I've yet to find it. We have started this book and He is reading for the Book Group he found with the Teen Group Locally here. We are reading this outloud due to time. He is already reading a different book that is quite large.

So far a good read Jan

 03 Good author site below.

Princess Bride

William Goldman

We just got done reading this book. While the dialog of this book was good it was still to detailed in some areas and just to slow in others but in the end it was a great book we laughed a times more than I thought we could. The movie is pretty much the same as the book the only difference it will only take you 2 hours to watch instead of 10 days to read. We both agree that the book was ok but stick with the movie you may get more out of it! No study guides or known links for this book! March 03

Treasure Island

This is our most current read. It has taken over a month just to get 100 pages in so its not going well. He seems to fall asleep every time I go to read. I think that we are going to watch the oldies movie and then see if we can finish it up. If not then its time to move on! 4.03

Artemis Fowl The Eternity Code

We are currently reading this book out loud and have chosen the next book after Artemis. 5.03

We are 1/3 through this book and it is soo far a very good read. Adults can enjoy this book as well.

Artemis Fowl

A. says we never finished reading this book. I couldn't believe it so I went and looked and low and behold we left off with 10 pages to go...So it must be read! 6.03

A. has exceeded his personal goal of 28 or more books for the year....Lets hear it for A.. On top of that he will be reading over the summer at least 3 books on his own , Kits Wilderness and others of his choice. So he has done a great job this year. Reading never gets old it just gets better with age....

N.

5.9.03

While the books below have not been read this year, some I will transfer to next year and some I'll put on the shelf for him to read when he wants too.

Not all books are meant to be read at one sitting.

So don't be surprised if some show up next year.

Stowaway

I got 40 almost 50 pages into this book and was told get rid of it. I'm falling asleep. However I thought that this book was ok. It held some interest in an adventure it just was taking to long to get to the adventure for my son. I'll see if we can't get through it and if not it will be sold not kept.

The Goblet

Redwall

At the beginning of the year we rented the Cds of the book. While he has the book to read and several of the others (there are 14 or 15 in the series) we where turned off by the rhythmic story teller so maybe we will wait a year to read this book.

A Squires Tale

We got this book from the library and found that we just didn't have time to read it but it looked good so I'll give it another try if Treasure Island doesn't go too well.

The Maltese Falcon

He was going to read this for a reading group but never got a chance too.

Hardy Boys

Franklin W. Nixon

He read the Hardy Boys and the Bombay Boomerang and while it was an easy read after the Lord of the Rings he still seemed to enjoy a much simpler and shorter read.

Seeing Stone

Kevin Crossley-Holland

He read this book and states that not only is it easy but fun. I like it when we pick books together that he actually enjoys. It means we are working together and it makes a big difference. He enjoyed this book and would like the other two in the series. Once I get time and money I'll go and get them for him. Jan 03

The White Mountains

John Christopher

This was a quick and I do mean quick read for the book group he wanted to go to. I was under the impression that he did not particularly care for this book but he has stated that it was just an ok book not on his best sellers list. It's funny that when I mentioned the book to my husband he said he had read them at the same age and had the three volume when he was a kid.  Jan 03

 The Sword in The Stone

 T.H. White

He enjoyed this book and added this to his silent read section this year. He informed me that after all the fast and difficult reading this year he wanted something that would move fast. I suggested he read this book. He is getting ready to do Medieval History and thought this might be a fun way to look at that time period. In fact next school year he will read  Morte D'Arthur.  He read this book and thought that the book was close to the movie. I had to inform him really the book came first then the movie. This book is the first part in a bigger book called The Once and Future King loosely based on Malory's Morte D'Arthur. For more information on the author and just general synopsis of  T.H. Whites works I've found a great page to aid in study and general topic discussion.

Diablo Book 1Legacy of Blood

Richard A. Knaak

He has read this book and wanted to read the next in the series so I let him. You know its not just about reading anymore it's about the want to read! He really enjoys the game so why not. He knows it's fiction and not real so why not let him read it.

Diablo Book 2 The Black Road

Mel Odom

Wow I bought this book for him and within a 8 day period he's read the complete book. And has asked for the third and final (so far ) in the series.

Diablo Book 3 The Kingdom of Shadow

Richard A. Knaak

This is the last in the series to date. After this book its back to reading some of the others on the list. After all personal read can be directed somewhat by Me - mom-.......

Baldurs Gate Book 1 of a trilogy

Philip Athans

Here is A. asserting his personal read selection. It is a great joy for me when he chooses with-out asking for suggestion. My husband read this book and the trilogy and felt that this book was suitable for him to read. However after reviewing the reviews on Amazon and other sites on the next two books in the trilogy we've decided to read the other two books before he does to make sure WE feel he is ready for any mature and or unsettling reading.

His review on this book was good and enjoyed the read. He is disappointed not to be able to go right into the next book in the series. With that being said he read The Sword in the Stone and now will be going on to The White Plum Mountains Greyhawk series of books. A. likes series books.

Enders Game

Orson Scott Card

He read this book and thought it was a good book. He read this book over his Winter break time that we gave him and he seemed to enjoy it.  Eventually he would like to read Enders Shadow the next book in the series.

White Plume Mountain

This is the current read of Andrew's. He starts this book tomorrow and plans to read the three books in the series. His father read all of these books and felt that they where a good read with nothing too out of the way. Also the reviews on Amazon did not look to bad for these books as well.3.03

Decent into the Depths of the World

A. read this series very fast. He enjoyed them very much for personal reading. 4.03

Queen of the Demonweb Pits

He finished this book in about 3 days and wanted to know why there were not more in the series, we couldn't tell him why there where no others in the series but encouraged him to find other books in similar series that perhaps would entice him. 4.03

Akiko and the Alpha Centauri 5000

He was given an hour and a half to read and in that time he finished all 153 pages of the book. He likes the author and informed that this was a stand alone book. That he was not sure there where going to be anymore. 4.14.03

Over Sea Under Stone

This was his current read. However he had stated that in the begining there was no action or not a lot of exciting things going on that is why, Wow he finished this book and asked for more in the series. So I bought the other 4 books in the series and he is reading them. 5.03

The Dark Is Rising

He finished this book in no time and went on to the next book, Saying that he wanted to continue reading the rest of the series. 5.03

Greenwitch

He read this book in two days. He thought that the book was good and I look forward to reading the review he wrote on this book 5.03

The Grey King

He read this book and says it was good 5.03

Silver on the Tree

He finished this book in no time and went on to his summer reading

6.03

There will be a change here or there but for the year these are the books to be read.

While this is not the typical 7th grade list its still a very good smattering of literature from Classical Fiction to Modern Fiction.  The Personal Read section while even though it's personal its more geared to his reading style and therefore will reflect that. The Outloud or listening section is just what it implies. These books are read with purpose. There are many purposes such as college bound, morals, ethics, and perhaps adventure.  There will be a total of (no matter what) 28 books (I count the Lord of the Rings as one while there are 3 books in this edition he has making the grand total to 31 books).  While some books are easier reads some books are above grade level of 8th or 9th (Watership Down).  Of course if the 5th Harry Potter comes out the week after we are through with homeschooling for the year but most likely we will read it anyway over the summer. Thanks for looking and I hope you enjoy our reading selections. N.

Summer Reading

The Greyhawk Set of books

Against the Giants

He finished this book and wanted to continue reading the rest.

Temple of Elemental Evil

He states that this was an excellent book!

 Keep on the Borderlands

He has been asked to read also over the summer

Dr. Jeckell and Mr. Hyde

Kits Wilderness

He is free there after to read anything he likes.

Also the book that will be read out loud will be Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

We Read this book out loud. We Helped each other out emmensly and found that with 870 pages it was a whole lot of reading. It has taken much of the reading time per day hence his summer reading is not as much as I wanted but that is ok because what he didn't get to over the summer just means more to read in the Fall.

We both enjoyed Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix except when someone died and Harry acted like a well ...TEENAGER....

Other then that it was excently written and the characters where written to true teenagers standards.
