Reading is like a Bike You Never forget How

Outloud Reading

Basically This section is as it states

outloud via either reading by myself or my son, cd, or tape. This is the literature analysis section of his Language arts section. There are 22 books and I expect at least 18 to be read during the year another words a book every two weeks with hopes that the other 4 books can be got to somehow with either excerpts or just movie being done. These books will also be watched when possible to make an analysis of book to movie or movie to book. This makes reading the book some what more fun for a middle school/high school aged boy.

1. Swiss Family Robinson

by Johann David Wyss, Edward Packard

I'm glad we read this book first in the year. We made it through all 350 pages of the unabridge version. The old english translation was frankly boring and the language a world unto its own.

As my son pointed out there are no pirates in the book like the movie and he feels that the movie by Disney is far better then the book- I agree with his summation in full. Sep 03

Not much on this book but here is what I have...

2.Old Man and the Sea

by Ernest Hemingway

We read/heard  this book in 3 days. Since I have the book as well we are following along and since it is a small Novella it has only taken us 3 days to listen to the cd version of this Novella. We watched the movie with Spencer Tracey and it was very blah just like the book. It is hard to imagine how this book won a Pulitzer Prize in 1953. However with that being said,  there is a lot to learn from this very simple read as what you read is very thought provoking. Sep 03

3. Indiana Jones and the Genesis Deluge

Rob MacGregor

This book is an obvious addition to the required reading section. We - and I say We needed some excitement in his required reading (after the first two books I just had to have a change!).

So for the next two weeks we are in for some adventure. So far this is an adventurous book with Indy all over the world.Sept 03

This book is not for college reading list but its for sanity purposes.

4.The Red Badge of Courage

He just started this book and it is new to the list. It was a suggestion from My Mother-In-Law. He enjoyed last years Civil War study and so I thought he might enjoy a biography type book on this subject. Oct 03

5. The House of Seven Gables

Nathaniel Hawthorne

We are currently reading this book outloud and while this book seems to move somewhat along, the Vocabulary or verbiage is just annoying and rather old fashioned in this somewhat dated mystery.   We finished this book and where that much happier....Hurray....

Oct. and Nov 03

6.Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

We listend to Jim Dales rendition of this book and found it to be wonderful, all 23 disc's. I would listen to it again and again. If you play it on your computer you can download a skin - player that is a Hogwarts/Harry Potter skin, it makes listening that much more fun.

This was fun listening to it again we decided we needed to listen to some of the other books again.

Oct 03

7. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkhaban

We listend to this book on CD and enjoyed listening too it, however it only made us want to listen to the rest of the books hence. Finished Nov 03

8. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

We enjoy these series of books Finished Feb of 04

9.Bartimeaus The Amulet of Samarkand

by Johnathan Stroud

Excellent Book! While it is an interesting read the journey the character takes are thought provoking and in all the read ask interesting questions for discussion about what is right and what is wrong not only with society but with sterotypes.

10.Eragon

By Christopher Paolini

What can I say other then it was also a great journey, written by a homeschool teen who obviously needed more out what he was reading. So instead wrote his own novel and did a pretty good job at it! We enjoyed this book as I think any teenage boy will.

.11.Kidnapped

by Robert Louis Stevenson

http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/kidnapped/study.html

I'm soo thankful we are almost done reading outloud this book, so in May we can start another hopeful page turner. The old english used in this book is at times agony to get through and boring at best.

What is to Come:

I know we can't get most of the other books read by the end of the year so we've decided to read outloud at least two more books over the next month and a half and probably over the summer we'll read one book outloud and he will be required to read at least two others on his own at his own pace.

Rebecca

by Daphne du Maurier

We tried to get into Rebecca....We read the first two chapters and then decided to get it on CD or Tape and lets just say the Tape was so horrid it gave me a headache. I don't think A. is going to be able to read this book this year. I might give it a try but not now. Oct 03

Silent Reading

While Silent reading is of  a personal nature these books are suggestions only for a more enjoyable reading and personal interest. However with that being said as my husband and I are we feel accomplished readers we would hope that our suggestions for his reading will be taken seriously. We think that due to his age he should be able to polish off around three books a month with all of the other homeschool things going along.
