MUCKRAKER ARTICLE

ASSIGNMENT/GRADING

ASSIGNMENT:

Write a 2-page investigative report for a muckraking magazine. The article must be based on historical research on the topic. The topic may be any issue of concern during the period 1875-1920, such as labor issues, women's suffrage, the urban poor, imperialism, political corruption, and the excesses of monopolies and trusts. The article should:

  • be documented (bibliography and separate recitation of the applicable facts)
  • be realistic
  • be sensational and shocking
  • be action-oriented
  • contain conflict
  • end with a solution to the problem

FORMAT:

The cover of the magazine should have the magazine's name in the style of a nameplate across the top of the page, with the date and year in smaller writing below, followed by a drawing or cartoon about the subject of the article. Illustration must be yours and not an existing picture of the topic.

The magazine article should have the title of the article centered at the top, followed by the name of the author, then the rest of the article. Type or write the article in a two-column format to help create the look of a real magazine.
