AP LESSON 35
THE CLIMATE OF IMPERIALISM
INTERNATIONAL PERSPECTIVES
- Annam (Viet Nam) - taken
over by France in 1874
- Tunisia - protectorate
of France in 1881
- Egypt - became virtually
an English colony in 1883
- Marshall Islands -
taken over by Germany in 1884
- Burma - taken by England
in 1885
- Samoa - shared by England,
Germany, and United States in 1889
- Rhodesia - carved out
of Africa in 1895 by England
- Mariana Islands - except
for Guam, purchased from Spain by Germany in 1899
- During the closing decades
of the nineteenth century, the major European powers strove to extend
their empires in Africa, Asia, and the South Pacific. By creating colonies
and claiming territories, the imperialists secured trade and expanded
power. A fundamental belief in European superiority is evident in the
treatment of developing lands and peoples by nations such as England,
France, and Germany.
- America also had imperialist
tendencies at the turn of the century:
- Annexation of Hawaii
- Acquisition of
the Philippines, Guam, Puerto Rico
- Participation in
Spanish-American War
- Panama Canal
- A variety of factors
influenced U.S. decisions in the South Pacific, Latin America, and
the Caribbean. Both imperialists and anti-imperialists had strong
reasons for their positions.
