Social Security has been around for a long time. It got started as a part of the New Deal (1935) by Roosevelt . The Social Security Act gave benefits to the elderly, poor, unemployed, and the disabled. In shorter words the act gave help to anyone that couldn't help them selves. As time progressed, the Social Security act got many additions and amendment. This has lasted till the year 2005, but President George W. Bush is thinking about making even more drastic changes to it. There have been many protests but some say that his plan is for the better. The Websites below provide links to web pages about what is going on with social security in the past, present and future. They also talk about Bush's plans for social security and how he personally feels about the public's reactions to it.

The only problem with this website is it is on The Student Resource Center, you may need a password to access this but most libraries and schools have them available. But overall this website is very helpful in understanding how the Social Security Act was passed.
The website above describes the total impact of social security on the needy in the 1930s-40s. Very helpful in getting a true understanding on just how important the social security act is. Without the act many of the needy would not have survived the end of the great depression. Very Helpful! Once again it is in the Student Resource Center and requires a password.
The website above explains exactly how social security aided the children and how it helped get many of their families out of the depression. It also describes how big of an impact that Social Security had on them. Very eye opening article. But once again this website is in the Student Resource Center so you may need a password. Ask your local school or library.
