In the 1920's, America was changing. Due to new discoveries and controversial events, the American public was merging towards a more lenient society. In this decade, the majority of social arguments were between the Traditional values of the past and the Modern values of the future. These were causing waves of change within music, the arts, politics, and government. The sites below provide information on these clashes between tradition and modernism, and urban and rural.

Organized Crime and Prohibition
Prohibition caused conflicting morals in the American outlook. This website discusses how the Prohibition laws led to the rise in crime, especially in disregarding the laws of illegal alcohol. It especially deals with the crime in Chicago, in which traditional values were ignored and the crime rate rose dramatically.

People and Events: The Jazz Age
This website deals with the general changes that took place during the 1920's. Important people and events are included and discussed generally. To learn about the topic in more specific detail, click on the links.

The 1920's
American life changed due to new devices. This led to different views on American tradition. This website shows the general change in views on how American life should be lead.

Clash of Cultures
This site provides an introduction to the social conflicts of the 1920's. It discusses clashes of traditional and modern values. The site even provides a chart showing the changes during this time period.

This source discusses the changes for women during the 1920's. Further sections include information on Image and Lifestyle; Work, Education and Reform; Sexuality; The African American New Woman; and Opposition.

The Scopes Trial
This website shows the conflict between religion and science in the 1920's through the explanation of the Scopes Trial. There are some words that are linked, and they explain the term.

Republicans and a "Return to Normalcy"
This source gives an overview of the want of a return to traditional, more conservative government. The site describes the changes that resulted from this "return to normalcy". This website is not good if you are looking for a detailed explanation.

This website introduces the idea of the new modern day appliances from the 1920s. The 1920s was a decade of prosperity and when traditional values were changed into modern values with the advent of the washing machine and the vacuum. This site discusses this conflict.

Flapper Fashion
This site discusses the modern values of women during the 1920s compared to the traditional values before WWI. It also discusses the change in fashion for women known as the "flapper image." This site is great to receive usable information on the idea of traditional vs. modern values in the 1920s but more specifically on how women changed as a whole both physically and spiritually.

This site discusses the conflict between rural vs. urban areas in the 1920s by drawing the idea of traditional values and modern values. This site best describes how Americans changed not only spiritually but also how they changed their views on how to live. This site also creates interesting facts and examples to help readers get a clearer picture about the great changes in the 1920s.

This site discusses the change in manufacturing and new technological advances from the traditional values to modern values in the 1920s.
