The New Deal was President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s plan for pulling the United States out of the Great Depression. While it did not completely draw the U.S. from the economic disaster, as this job was credited to the war industries of World War II, the New Deal was a large step toward a stable economy. Much of the New Deal was devoted to giving jobs to those who had lost them. This effort was mainly comprised of a series of acts that created what are known as alphabet soup agencies. Some groups, like the Civilian Conservation Corps, President Roosevelt’s personal favorite, provided immediate jobs while others helped with relief, recovery and reform. While the way the programs and efforts worked varied, the goal was common and, for the most part, was achieved. Below is a list of sights that both agree and contradict that the New Deal succeeded in providing jobs that may be helpful to any future research projects.

Successes and Failures of Roosevelt's New Deal Programs-An explanatory list of “alphabet soup” programs. Gives a detailed description of the program, as well as the overall outcome of the program.

People and Events: The Great Depression-An overview of the Great Depression and the New Deal.

How FDR’s New Deal Harmed Millions of Poor People-Suggests that FDR’s New Deal did not help, but in fact harmed, millions of poor people.

Myths of the New Deal-Many people believed that the New Deal helped to create jobs, but this web site is persuasive in its argument about how this belief is in fact a myth.

The New Deal Debunked (again)-This site provides data to suggest that the New Deal was not as successful as it is believed to be. It contains much information to support its argument, so it gives a unique perspective on the events of the time period.

The New Deal-This page alone provides a very basic overview of the events and programs of the New Deal. The thing that makes this site very useful, is that most of the people, programs, and events, are links to other pages that go into more depth on the specific subject, or program.

FDR Revisited: The New Deal was no cure-all-This is another site that argues that FDR's New Deal was not beneficial. This one in particular argues that FDR's programs not only were unhelpful, but that they actually prolonged the depression.

Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal-This site provides good general information on FDR's New Deal.

FDR's Second New Deal - More Jobs- Gives information focusing on what as known as the "Second New Deal". Provides information on the specific programs, and has a sample of a worksheet that can be used to see how well you read the document.
