In this Webliography, we will be exploring how Prohibition became popular and provided the origin for organized crime in the United States. Prohibition, by law, is the forbidding of manufacture, transportation, and distribution of alcoholic beverages. Prohibition started because of the 18th Amendment. This Amendment was put in place because alcohol seemed to be a cause of crime in America. This ban on alcohol caused a rise in organized crime. Organized crime is unlawful activities of a highly organized matter. Organized crime such as bootlegging and the opening of speakeasies. Bootlegging is the illegal smuggling of alcoholic beverages. Speakeasies are illegal bars that opened to distribute bootlegged alcohol.

Organized Crime and Bootlegging

This site has a lot of information about organized crime, especially bootlegging. It also explains the correlation between Prohibition and organized crime, and how easy it was for people to obtain liquor if they really wanted it.

Temperance & Prohibition

This website is a great site. It informs the reader about the beginning of prohibition, and some of the immediate effects of prohibition on the economy. You also are given example and definitions of speakeasies, prohibition, and illegal alcoholic activity at this time.

Social Issues- Organized Crime

This site talks about the Mafia and the increase of the crimes they committed. It also talks about the composition of the Mafia (i.e.. People, Divisions, etc.)

This sites talks about our topic exactly. It talks about how about which outlaws in the Prohibition and Organized Crime era became heroes among them all.

This site shows the interstate politics of the prohibition. The site tells you what legislation was passed that would affect individual states before the Constitutional Amendment. It told how the wet states and the dry states kept independent from each other.

This site is literally Prohibition in a nutshell. It explains everything from where Prohibition started to who were the main leaders of prohibition.

This site explains how Prohibition was a social experiment that failed. It show the pros and cons of Prohibition and why it failed.
