Overview

The Depression swept across America and left most US citizens in poverty. The members of the Bonus Army needed the bonus money before the scheduled payments were due because of the Depression. 25% of the population was unemployed and 32,000 businesses failed. In May 1932 about 1,000 World War I veterans marched across the country to the Capitol in Washington D.C. to demand their reparations three years early. These Veterans desired the bonus money to assist them in an effort to get out of debt. By July 1932, 17000 people were camped out on the edge of Washington D.C. to wait for their money. When the Senate did not allow the distribution of bonuses, violence broke out. Most bonus marchers left Washington D.C., however some 2,000 remained behind. Eventually the US Army and police drove the remaining marchers away.
