Recall is a type of check. There is a vote taken to determine whether someone in a legislative position should remain in office for the remainder of their term or not. Initiative is when citizens sign a petition to force a public vote over a law or amendment. This means the citizens can have a law they disapprove of removed. Referendum is where a vote is held to determine whether a legal proposal would be accepted.
