GUIDED INSTRUCTIONS - HONORS

THIS WORKSHEET MUST REMAIN IN YOUR NOTEBOOK AFTER THE EXERCISE HAS BEEN COMPLETED AND GRADED.

The SQ3R Method is an efficient reading method which helps a student pick out important points and remember those points.

SQ3R is an abbreviation. Each letter stands for the steps which the student follows

SURVEY Take a few minutes to glance over the whole reading assignment. Look at major headings, pictures, charts, graphs. Also, look over any summary paragraphs. Write a short title in you notebook; this is the topic of the reading.

QUESTION Turn each paragraph heading into a question. For example, if a heading is entitled, The Politics of Reconstruction, you can turn it into the question, What were the politics of Reconstruction? Write the question in your notebook under the survey topic. You are now mentally set to start finding the answers to the question.

READ Read to answer the question, actively searching for the answer. Read only to the end of the section.

wRITE Now that you've read the first section, try to write the answer to your question without looking at the book. Try to use your own words whenever possible. You do not need to write in complete sentences or paragraphs.

If you can answer the question, you have learned that section.
If you can't, glance over the section again.

REPEAT STEPS 2, 3, AND 4 ON EACH SECTION

Turn the next heading into a question.
Read to answer the question.
wRite the answer.

REVIEW When you've completed the assignment, review briefly each headed section and try to recall the major points. Reviewing helps increase your understanding of the material as well as the remembering of it.

GUIDED PRACTICE - Chapter 4 section 4

SURVEY Turn to page 184 in your textbook. Glance over the introduction and the first section. Read the picture caption on page 185 and the Political Cartoon information on page 187. Write the section 4 topic on the following line.

QUESTION Look at the first paragraph heading; this is the writing in bold blue print that begins with "The Politics of Reconstruction." Turn that statement into a question and write it on the following line.

READ Read the first portion of section 4 and stop at the next bold blue paragraph heading. Read to answer your question.

wRITE Write the answer to your question on the following lines. You should have more than one answer since the paragraphs discuss a few different aspects of Reconstruction politics. (Hint–you should have at least one idea from each of the subsections, i.e. Lincoln's Plan; Johnson's Plan for Reconstruction; Congressional Reconstruction; Johnson Impeached; U.S. Grant Elected.) Additionally, you must define any words in bold type.

REPEAT Repeat the process with the second portion of section 4
