The Reed S. Snyder Memorial Teacher Excellence Award began in the 1999-2000 school year. The first year of the award was very special. Instead of taking nominations, the family and colleagues of Mr. Snyder identified four  teachers Mr. Snyder had worked with during his career in Montgomery  County, Maryland, that he thought were exceptional. Those four teachers were honored as the first recipients of the award. Each school year thereafter, one teacher is selected from the nominations received.
