Membership Information  (last updated 2/17/2010)

This page addresses some of the most common issues involving membership in and use of the Monte Sano Club. For more information, see the Bylaws of the Club.

Full Members

Members of the Monte Sano Club own equity in the Club. A member can attend meetings of the Club, vote on issues before the Club, and can serve on the Board of Directors. Or course, members have full right to use the facilities of the club.

The annual dues are determined each year by the Board of Directors. Dues are due on March 1, and are delinquent after March 31. A late fee, determined by the Board of Directors, must be paid after March 31.  Dues for the 2009 season will be $450.  The late fee will remain $50.

A member of the Monte Sano Club can sell (or give) the membership to someone else. The cost of the membership is decided by the seller and the buyer. However, the Board of Directors must approve the transfer, and a transfer fee of $125 must be paid to the Club. The membership application can be downloaded below:

The Club maintains a list of interested buyers and sellers as well as recent purchase prices for memberships.  Contact the Membership Chair if you are interested in buying or selling a membership.

The Club currently is at full membership with 32 people on the waiting list.

Summer Permits

A Summer Permit gives all of the rights to use the facilities of the Club for a summer season (as described on this page). However, a Summer Permit does not grant equity in the Club, and a Summer Permit holder cannot serve on the Board and has no voting rights. The number of summer permits and the cost of a summer permit are determined each year by the Board of Directors.

Family Members

Any person who permanently resides in the home of a member (or permit holder) may use the facilities of the Club. A young adult who no longer resides in the home of a member is considered a guest, and must be accompanied by a member and pay the usual guest fee. Baby-sitters who have been approved by the Board are not required to pay a guest fee when supervising a child of a member at the Club.

Inactive Status

A request for inactive status must be made in writing and approved by the Board. An inactive member does not pay dues, but is not allowed to use the facilities of the club or vote. According to the bylaws, the following conditions must be met:

  1. The member's place of residence changes to one outside of the Huntsville area (at least 25 files from the city limits).
  2. The anticipated period of residency outside of the Huntsville area is more than twelve months.

A member can be inactive for a maximum of three years. At the end of three years, the member must convert to active, dues-paying status or transfer the membership as described above.

Guests

A member or (permit holder) must accompany each guest and remain at the Club with the guest. Out-of-town guests will be admitted free. In-town guests are required to pay a guest fee, determined each year by the Board of Directors. Each in-town guest is limited to specified number of visits per season, determined each year by the Board of Directors There may be additional guest fees for special events. As noted above, a baby-sitter who has been approved by the Board does not have to pay the guest fee when supervising a child of a member.
