with Murder by Death, Sleepstation, Merciana
March 22, 2003
Stingray’s, Old Bridge New Jersey

Sleepstation started things off slow, gradually easing into a cruising tempo. Most of their songs were about robots and hookers. They took advantage of an echoing vocal effect and techno intros. Following their last song, the drummer dove through his cymbals, knocking them to the ground, and crawled down the steps and out of the standing area. Hey, when you have to go... you have to go.

Noteworthy instruments Murder by Death used include a huge keyboard and an electric cello. The cello fit in perfectly with the music, adding a level of intensity not usually found in rock. Each member was not only dressed in black, but had also mastered his or her instrument, equaling one heck of a sound. Most of their songs were about devils, whiskey and shooting stuff. One of their songs, Killbot 2000, was about an elementary school full of zombies. Murder by Death’s last song was played in the dark, concluding in a huge cloud of fog.

The ever humble My Chemical Romance didn’t seem too affected by their first ever show as a headling band. Before they took the stage they could be seen talking to the crowd and enjoying the opening bands. They were equally appreciative on stage. They played all of the usuals, a new song, their usual cover (although promised to be the last time they play it - ever), and Demoliton Lovers (not usually one they can play live). A nice set from a nice bunch of guys in a nice band.
