with The Washdown, and Ikara
Colt
March 1, 2003
Northstar Bar, Philadelphia PA
The view would’ve been great but there was this guy bouncing up and down
like his knees didn’t have joints and just bounced harder and harder as
new bands came on. An estimated 150 could jam into the Northstar. Upstairs you
could catch an aerial view of the bands and from downstairs an optimal view was
available everywhere on the floor.
For The Washdown, all of the equiptment for the Ikara Colt and Sahara Hotnights
was on the tiny stage leaving little room for the band themselves. That didn’t
seem to bother anyone in the band, especially as the lead singer flailed around
and swung the microphone in every direction. The music was great, energy high,
and an entertaining stage presence.
The Ikara Colt was three guys and one girl playing rock from England. They were
all very talented musicians. The drummer could hold a beat better than the guys
from Nas and all of the guitar players were equally talented. As for the vocals,
I never heard a sour note.
Sahara Hotnights was NON-STOP music and energy. As soon as we saw them enter
the stage they were playing music and stopped a total of twice to say “hey”.
Their music was almost annoyingly loud, louder than any concert I’ve been
to. But all that loudness sounded great! The guitar playing was flawless, as
were the drums and vocals. They played a long set that seemed shorter due to
their energy and dedication to actually playing rather than talking.
The new coolest venue in Philadelphia with three awesome bands from Florida,
England and Sweden. In that order.
