Second Sunrise, David and Aimée Thurlo, Forge, ©2002, 336 pp.
ISBN 0-765-30441-4
This is the first book in a new series by the Thurlos. Most books in the Native American mystery genre hint about the traditions and stories from the tribes appearing in the book. With Second Sunrise the Thurlos lead the read smack into the middle of Navaho traditions. In this series, Lee Nez is a nightwalker or vampire who works as a state patrolman in New Mexico and tracks down and kills skinwalkers in his spare time. In this book Lee meets Diane Lopez, an FBI agent. They quickly become partners and find they are very simpatico.
This is a strange, quirky book. I enjoyed it. I'm not a fan of vampire books and have never read Anne Rice. Nevertheless, this book is fun, entertaining and engaging. I give it an A- or 91%.

This book is the second in the Lee Nez series. It's an interesting concept. There are two main characters: Diane Lopez, a young, good looking FBI agent and Lee Nez, a Navaho Indian who works as a New Mexico state police officer. Oh, and Lee Nez is a nightwalker: a Navajo Vampire. As such, he is nearly immortal, but can be killed by an extremely death or by overexposure to the sun. Lee tends to work at night, but can work during the day as long as he remains out of the direct sun and uses sunscreen.
In this book Diane and Lee are facing two groups of adversaries. One is a group of jewel thieves who, since they are skinwalkers smuggle raw materials for Navajo jewelry from Mexico while assuming the shapes of wolves.
The other and more dangerous group consists of two women nightwalkers who seek revenge on Lee Nez.
I enjoyed this book, sometimes I found I couldn't put it down. The more of this series I read, the more I enjoy it. I would grade it a good solid A-, or 92%

Pale Death, David and Aimée Thurlo, Forge, ©2005, 254 pp.
ISBN 0-765-31385-5
In this third, and at the time of this review, newest of the Lee Nez books. Lee and Diane find themselves up against a Vampire. Not just any Vampire, mind you, but a vampire who has been made crazy by being subjected to pain and torture by a mysterious agency of the United States Government. When he escapes and goes throughout New Mexico seeking revenge on his captors and tormentors, Lee and Diane must work to solve the mystery of why he was captured, by whom, and certainly not least, bring the crazed Vampire's killing spree to an end.
I look these books, the more of them I read. I can't wait for the next one to come out.
This book is the best yet and the most fun. A good solid effort deserving a 94% or a good solid A.
