A Parrot Head
After 13 and a few months of service, I left the Navy toward the end of 2001.
I was an Aviation Storekeeper (AK2). Permanent Duty Stations included Fighter Squadron Eighty Four (VF-84) out of Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach, VA., Naval Air Station Oceana Aviation Supply Department, Patrol Squadron ELEVEN and Patrol Squadron TEN both out of Brunswick, Maine., Naval Air Station Supply Department, Key West, Florida.
I'm currently living in Chattanooga, TN, where I'm originally
from but someday I want to move back to a beach! To sail away to a
tropical island
would be a dream come true. White sandy beaches and
as the song 'Margaritaville' goes... "Living on sponge cake...
watching the sun bake...".
I'm a big fan of the music of Jimmy Buffett. I became a true blue 'Parrot Head' during the Persian Gulf War while onboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) while with the Fighting Eighty-Four (VF-84) 'Jolly Rogers'.
I knew who Jimmy Buffett was and knew of several songs but I
didn't know about all of his songs that they don't play on the
radio. I only had the album 'Songs You Know By Heart' during the
cruise. I then wanted to add to my CD's collection by ordering more
CD's and now I believe I have all of his work. During the cruise I
worked the night shift (called night check). At midnight one of my
squadron buds, 'Chopper', would come to our maintenance and
material
office and he and I would do 'fins to the left, fins to the right'
and then I would proceed to update my 'countdown' counter for when
the cruise would come to a end. 'Chopper' informed me of a concert
in Virginia and I wrote and got a couple of tickets from relatives
of mine. It was my first concert and let me tell you, it was hot and
humid, all I had left on were my shorts and loafers, but that was
one of the best times I've ever had.
While living in Maine from 1994 - 1998, I went again to another concert in Great Woods, Massachusetts. That adventure almost could be turn into a book. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
