Vision Statement
Well, In looking at the state of recreational cycling in the Fort Collins area I
have a few things I would like to see. In the words of the Great Martin Luther King Jr., I
have a dream:
 | That the recreational cycling community would become less fragmented. |
 | That regular rides for all levels of ability would exist. |
 | That a uniform way to rate the difficulty of rides would accepted. |
 | That cyclists would step forward and begin to establish rides every day of the week. |
 | That more experience cyclists would help to educate the less experienced in cycling
etiquette. |
 | That those cyclists that are un-happy with the situation would say & do something
about it. |
 | That those little "buddy" clubs that exist would band together and form or
join larger groups |
 | That one day on any day of the week I can wakeup and say. "What speed/pace ride do
I want to do today"
|
Why write this statement. Well, I love cycling. I have made many friendships and enjoyed
sharing many miles with my fellow cyclists. I fear that if we don't make some changes now,
that cycling as a form of social recreation will go the way of the dinosaur. Think about
it, How many Juniors have you seen doing any serious cycling? probably not many. Without a
strong committed cycling community the only new cyclists in the area will be ones from out
of state. Sadly we will end up with cycling getting the undo stigma of being an "old
peoples" activity.
I have spoken to a good number of cyclists that feel the same way that I do. Many are from
other areas where my dream was the norm. Coming to this area, where the roads are sweet
and the scenery breathtaking, it was a great shock to find the cycling community here in
the state that it is in. I want to get others to realize that they are not alone. I would
encourage anyone with ideas with the time and the passion to act on them. Join a cycling
club like the Cycling Friends of Fort Collins
or the Fort Collins Cycling Club and volunteer to help make something happen.
