Starting Your Own Tree

Welcome to our tutorial page, on this page we will teach you how to build your own family tree. For this tutorial we will be using Legacy Family Tree Maker, you may use any family tree maker that you want but for these purposes we like Legacy.

To start things you might want to gather as much information as possible on your family, a great source of information would be your family itself. Talk to your parents, your grandparents, or any other family member that you think may have death certificates, birth certificates, baptismal records, or any official documentation ( these are a great source of information ).

Step 1
When you first open Legacy it will be blank. Go to File and select New Family File and it will ask you to name it.

Step 2
Click on pedigree view to start inputting information. Or you can input it from the Family view. It is much easier (for me anyway) to use the pedigree view, this way you can see how it will look and not post confused.

Step 3
Input your birth name and all information about yourself here. Cause you start with yourself and work back.

Step 4
Input your father's information here. If your father is deceased you would also put his date of death in along with where he is buried.

Step 5
Input your mother's information here. If your motherr is deceased you would also put her date of death in along with where she is buried.

Repeat this process until all information you have gathered has been inserted.
