S.C.O.R.E. Cyberguides NEW

CyberGuides are supplementary, standards-based, web-delivered units of instruction centered on core works of literature. Each CyberGuide contains a student and teacher edition, standards, a task and a process by which it may be completed, teacher-selected web sites and a rubric, based on California Language Arts Content Standards. In the guides, the magenta text indicates the language (or context-appropriate equivalent to the language) of the content standards.
You will find many of these guides downloaded and available in the North Beverly School Media Center.

Media Literacy Lesson Plan from KNE
Don't Buy It (PBS)
http://pbskids.org/dontbuyit/
Don't Buy It attempts to engage students in media literacy — the ability
to access, evaluate, analyze and produce both electronic and print media
— by dissecting pop culture and advertisements. Media literacy education
can help students build critical thinking and analytic skills, become
more discriminating in the use of mass media, distinguish between
reality and fantasy and consider whether media values are their values.
The following activities were designed for ages 9–11 and touch on the
six levels of Bloom's Taxonomy: knowledge, comprehension, application,
analysis, synthesis and evaluation. Each lesson is aligned with the
Mid-Continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL) Standards. In
addition to the activities, there are guides for teachers and parents, a
glossary, downloadables, and links to related resources.
Grade Level: Elementary, Middle School
Content Area: Business (Marketing), Community Interest
(Information/Media Literacy), Education (Curriculum) [Dewey #020]

discussion questions, worksheets, and word puzzles. Lesson Plans on
Bullies , Home Alone , Smoking, Eating Disorders, and Drug Abuse.

Kathy Schrock’s Discovery Page for Teachers

What makes this site outstanding for teachers is the range of choices in the teacher section: from lesson plans which are complete with goals, materials, projects, and extension resources to teaching tools to professional growth information in the form of tutorials, this site is superb.
The parent’s section has useful parenting ideas and suggestions for Discovery Channel home learning activities. The student section has information on different frameworks topics and a homework helper section.

Fin, Fur and Feather Bureau of Investigation (FFFBI) Headquarters http://www.fffbi.com/hq.html
The site uses interactive stories and original thinking games to get
kids to solve mysteries and learn crucial skills such as using the
Internet for research and investigation, reading, and writing. The
project encourages exploration of a wide range of subjects from math and
science to geography, genetics and history. Admittedly, it's also, as
one kid wrote, "freaky weird." Thank goodness, there is a section for
teachers which helps explain what's going on.
Jo Cool or Jo Fool: An Online Game about Savvy Surfing http://www-mirror.media-awareness.ca/eng/webaware/2joes/johome.htm
I looked at this site and thought it might be better for middle schoolers. However, I thought the fifth grade teachers might want to evaluate it for their use during the second half of the year.
As Jo surfs the net, you decide if he's Jo Cool or Jo Fool. Jo Cool
means he's smart. Jo Fool means he's about to "get a face full of
virtual pie." Includes a checklist for helping you decide if he's making
a good choice, a 20 question quiz at the end, and a 50 page pdf to help
teachers use the site. Finally, someone put some humor into media
literacy! From the Media Awareness Network.
Teacher Created Materials: Free Stuff http://www.teachercreated.com/free/
While this site does offer you free sample pages, its primary goal is to sell you materials.
Teacher Created Materials is an educational publishing company founded
in 1982 by Rachelle Cracchiolo and Mary Dupuy Smith, two classroom
teachers. The section with the "free stuff" contains Free Monthly
Activities, Free Lesson Plans & Activities, and Free Brain Teasers. Not
a whole lot of stuff; but that makes it pretty easy to use. Too bad
there is no archive of previous month's free stuff.
