Anna Alexandra Toby

Anna Alexandra Toby died from complications of extreme prematurity. She was born in the 25th week of pregnancy, fifteen weeks too soon, and developed necrotizing enterocolitis or "NEC". In this condition, the intestines are too immature to function and the tissue begins to die. The standard of treatment is to surgically remove the dead segments of intestine and hope that the rest begins to function properly. Anna had three major operations of this type at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, DC. She struggled bravely to recover after each surgery, but finally she no longer had enough healthy small intestine to support life. Her courageous battle ended at 6 1/2 months of age when she peacefully passed away in her parents' arms. Anna is survived by her triplet sisters Catherine Jean and Elisabeth Grace.
