My Opinion on
"Political Correctness"
What do I think of "political correctness", huh? Well, I guess that all depends on what you mean. Personally I find that "political correctness" is the rhetorical bogeyman of the arch-conservative fringe. They come up with the most lunatic ideas from the most bizarre people on the other side, claim it to be 'political correctness" (even though nearly no one adheres to the concepts represented) and then set forth to 'convict by association' anyone who shares any OTHER ideas with someone who shares these bizarre ideas. Not only that but they will even go several degrees off, in the manner of the Seven Degrees of Kevin Bacon! If A makes a stupid statement and she knows B and he knows C and she knows D and E has worked at one time with D and is married to F then they can try and claim that F's ideas on an entirely different topic should get the same disdain as those nutso ideas expressed by A! Did you follow that? The arch-conservatives bet you won't!
Basically, "political correctness' is just a buzzword, a catch-phrase, used by the arch-conservatives to label anything they dislike which may or may not be popular. When challenged on it they drag out old canards like "personhole covers" and other nonsense. But they decry as "political correctness" such 'novel concepts' as equal access, equal treatment under the law, fairness in the courts, etc. Does this surprise anyone? It does not surprise me. They cannot win, and they know it, based on the facts, so they create and villify buzzwords they can then apply wherever needed. A related one is 'Liberal'. Conservatives cannot specifically define the term, other than it is different from their position. But why should it be vilified? They are never specific on that... only that it should be because, well, it is 'politically correct' and THAT should be vilified. And when asked to specify why PC should be vilified they claim it is because it is LIBERAL! And 'round and 'round we go again! Dizzy yet?
