The initial data came from the GNIS database to which I have added references from the History of Lincoln County, Missouri; a 1904 map and other sources.
I use the term "community" to mean any city, village, town, Post Office, GNIS "populated place" or settlement. A city, village or town is a formally incorporated entity, while a "settlement" may be any informal location occupied by one or more residential households, being the earliest formation. GNIS uses the term "Populated Place" which is apparently inclusive of all. It appears that many of the early communities were simply "settlements." There may have been a general store occupied by one family (maybe two or three), servicing surrounding farms. May or may not have had a Post Office. This is true of most rural areas of the time. The presence of a Post Office is indicative of the official status of a location and the History of Lincoln County Missouri (Goodspeed; 1888; page 456) gives a listing of those as of that date. However, a Post Office may have been nothing more than a mail drop-off and pick-up point located in the Post Master's house in a corner. But the name would have been used to address mail and may have been indicated on census schedules.
A general idea of the location of these communities can be determined from the GNIS/USGS "Map" name, which generally corresponds to the name of a Lincoln County community shown on the 1904 and/or current (2004) maps. I do not know how they determine the boundaries of the "Map." Exceptions: Hamburg is a town in Calhoun County, Illinois across the Mississippi River approximately 3 miles East of Elsberry; Maryknoll is the area around Owen, shown on the 1904 map; Eolia is in Pike County, near the north border shared with Lincoln County; Warrenton NE I think is a community in St. Charles County, near the south border shared with Lincoln County; Bellflower North appears to be the community of Bellflower in Montgomery County, near the west border shared with that county.
There are a lot of internet websites that list these communities, implying they still exist; i.e. "OfficialCitySites.org" The same information (and mis-information) seems to be propogated among these sites. For example, they show Dameron as existing and that is one place I know is extinct. It appears that these websites simply copy the GNIS database which contains "Populated Places" that are no longer populated. (Except by the deceased.)
The Federal Township and Range system is used to describe land in Missouri. (References and description TBA). The Township name, rather than community name, may be used in various sources including newspaper articles and maps. Sometimes, it may not be clear which is which, especially if a township name is used without specifically stating "_______ Township." The Townships were done in the original land surveys and generally do not change names or boundaries. They are used as the basis of legal land descriptions. In larger metropolitan areas, the Township may also be a legal/taxing jurisdiction, but I don't think that is the case in Lincoln County and other sparsely-populated rural areas. It is the Township that is used as the named division in the various censuses. Sometimes the census schedules will show the town or Post Office, but that is not usually the case. A list of the townships in Lincoln County follows. I have not yet identified the townships in which the various settlements are located.
Many other place-names are mentioned in Lincoln County, but were not truly settlements or communities. Most were fords or mills. A ford was likely just a crossing over a creek or small river. Mills existed for processing of grain or sawing of lumber, probably located near a source of water for power and may or may not have been been an occupied dwelling. These are more likely indicative of land marks, rather than settlements or communities. An interesting list is found at: Ghost Town USA's Guide to the Ghost Towns of Lincoln County Missouri This is not a comprehensive list of ghost towns in Lincoln County: only a few towns are named and there are others not named. But is does list and describe numerous fords and mills.
See also: A Directory of Towns, Villages, and Hamlets Past and Present of Lincoln County, Missouri Compiled by Arthur Paul Moser
This list was put together quickly and is still in rough form. Information is clearly not complete and will be updated as additions and corrections are found. There are likely errors, as the information and sources are way incomplete. If there is persuasive information different than what is listed here, that information may be correct.

Notes about communities:
Alexandria Alexandria is the site on which Hines was later
located. Alexandria was laid out in 1822 and
became the county seat in 1823. In 1822 the
St. Louis and Hannibal Railroad bypassed the
town and it died out by 1829. Both these towns
are officially dead, but still have residents.
They were located near the intersection of
CR KK and SH 61. It was followed later by
what is now called OLD Alexandria.
Argentville 3mi. W of Winfield. GNIS shows as Pop.Place,
but no pop. in 2000 census.
Listed in 1990 MO DOT map.
Snow Hill Township, GNIS Map: Luckett Ridge.
Apparently never had a Post Office; inhabitants
mail through Winfield Post Office.
Bals 3mi. W of Old Monroe on CBQ West

the name cited.
Dameron Dameron was located four miles north of Elsberry
on Highway 79/Chicago Burlington & Quincy RR.
No traces remain, last two houses torn down
in the 1960's or 1970's.
Drydensville Was Snow Hill, later Brussels.
See Snow Hill notes.
Early Only mention I have ever seen of this name
is on Page 456 list of Post Offices.
PM in 1888 was a Robert Howell.
Elsberry See Clarence Cannon's 1955 History of Elsberry.

Falmouth This was a settlement located on the
Mississippi River three miles east of
See Clarence Cannon's 1955 History of Elsberry,

Sounds like a bustling port in its day,
but disappeared ca. 1880 due to
destruction of harbor and building of
railroad.
Fountain N' Lakes Sounds like a modern developed subdivision

Hurricane HLC, Page 415: "Hurricane is a station on the
St. Louis, Keokuk & Northwestern Railroad,
between Elsberry and Foley. It contains
one general store." This does not make sense:
1. RR line between Elsberry and Foley was
the C.B.& Q. (N-S)
2. 1904 map gives station between them as

the name cited as a settlement.
Nelson See Clarence Cannon's 1955 History of Elsberry,

the name cited.
New Liberty New Liberty was a town in northeastern Ninevah
Township. Named for the church. Probably
the area of New Liberty Cemetery, near Corso.
New Salem New Salem was a small hamlet in northern Monroe
Township near New Salem Baptist Church.
Parkers Landing Prob. west bank of Mississippi just east of Foley
Parkers Park Prob. very close to Parkers Landing, based on Lat./Long.
Oak Ridge Oak Ridge was located in east-central Hurricane Township.
Old Alexandria Old Alexandria was a town on the old site of
Alexandria. Old Alexandria was established
about 1860 and deserted by 1886. (It was
preceded by what is now called Alexandria.)
Old Westport Landing Prob. west bank of Mississippi opposite Hamburg IL
Pattersonville Pattersonville was a town, which was platted
but never developed on Guinns Creek on the
Pike County line. aka Patterson.
Snow Hill Snow Hill is a township in Lincoln County.
However, that name appears in some references
as a community. GNIS describes as "historical" "locale":
"Snow Hill was a voting place on Bobs Creek in
Snow Hill Twp in the late 1800s."
Reportedly, the Dryden family came from Snow Hill,
Maryland and wanted the new town to have the same
name as the town they came from. However, there
was already a town in Missouri with the same name.
The name was changed for a short time to Drydensville,
but the name had the same conflict with another
Missouri town. The name was again changed to
Brussels.
Sterling Landing West Bank of Mississippi; by 1888 a place only in name;
probably just east of Foley.
Stouts Settlement Stouts Settlement was an early community near New Hope.
Troy Troy is the county seat of Lincoln County, Missouri.
General Notes:
The settlements identified as "Landings" were presumably on the
west bank of the Mississippi. As was the case with Sterling Landing,
apparently begun very early (1830's) as docking ports for riverboat/barge
traffic and disappeared with the construction
of the railroads. Foley is the town in Lincoln County closest to
the Mississippi.
As of 2004, the Zip Code 63369 is associated with Old Monroe; cross-
referenced to Chain of Rocks, Ethlyn and Maryknoll which should use
Old Monroe.
