Remodeling January 2005

As much as we hated to do it, we just had to replace our lovely white carpet in the living room.  Anna cemented our decision by recycling her dinner on the carpet the night before.  Here are the results.

Remodeling June 2005

Our pepto-bismol pink guest room has finally been redone.  Soon after moving into our house, Lilla decided that the pink just had to go.  She quickly got to work targeting the rug for removal.   Two and a half years later we finished the job and had hardwood floors installed.   Now all I have to do is build some cabinets and shelves.  Our guest room has now been dubbed "the Green Room" or "the Quiet Room".

Wildflower Patch

This is an ongoing project I started in the fall of 2002.  I picked a section of open grass and weeds above the septic drainage field.  I was tired of mowing it so I decided to go low maintenance and grow some wildflowers.  I tried a bunch of different methods to prepare the ground, as recommended by the instructions that came with my seed packet.  For the first patch I burned a 20ft circle and hand tilled the ground.   The second patch was just hand tilled.  The third section was cleared with round-up and roto-tilled with the attachment on my weed eater, but the easiest and most successful method by far was discovered by Anna.  I enlisted her help in dispersing the seeds, however, like any good two year old, she didn't stay within the lines.  I soon noticed that the flowers were growing just as well on the uncleared, untilled areas as they were in the areas on which I spent so much time preparing the ground.   So much for following the directions.

Well, after all that work it took a two-year old to figure it all out.  So, now all I do is kill the grass and weeds with round-up in the late summer or fall, wait till spring for any early weeds to crop up and kill them again with round-up.  Throw down the seeds and make sure the ground stays wet for 6-8 weeks.  I don't even have to clear the dead stuff, it'll help the ground stay moist.   The hardest part is now waiting for the results.
